Steering ?

Being all new to the world of the Z4, I am interested to know other peoples thoughts on the feel of the stearing.

I have a 2.5i with the 5 spoke 18" alloys on and the steering feels a bit perculier! when driving it feels like the road is "grabbing" the wheels to the left and the right slightly, and it feels a bit light ?

Is this usual ?

O right, yes just searched, it is a "tramline" sensation!! nothing wrong then ?
No...
But it can be improved dramatically by switching to normal tyres.

Excellent, the tyres on there are almost new on the front since I got the car, I assume if you just changed the front tyres this would help?

Changing all four is highly recommended.
Changing only two can dramatically alter handling & is potentially unsafe.

If you can live with it, make the change next time.
OR
There is a market for RF tyres.
You could sell them, since some owners prefer to remain OE & the RF tyres are expensive to replace.

i think I can live with it now knowing their isnt anything wrong with my car :)

I thought all sorts of things, such as the power steering being shot etc :) cheers !

No problem mate.

yep its the naff run flat tyres. Take em off, set fire to them in your back garden and just ride round on the bare rims, you will find its far better, and more comfortable! :headbang:

takes away the lightness to the steering and in doing so I find it reduces the nervousness given by the tramlining. Find it give much better feel, give it a try :)

Watch out for slightly increased throttle response though...

Usual? Yes. I noticed the same thing at first and even thought my wheels were misaligned because of the steering (or lack of) on the road at times, especially on imperfect and bumpy roads. But I was told that was part of the ultimate driving experience. Oh well, I can live with that. :|

However, I'm hoping for more suspension in the 2009 Z4s and beyond. :driving:

Interesting - I havejust seen this post...I have made up my mind to move to non RF's.

All I need to do now is decide whether to buy a space saver or a compressor?

Anyone wanna buy some run flats!

As above the pulling around is tramlining happens in quite a few cars with low profile tyres.

Personally i feel the Z4 steering is very nice has a solid feel to it maybe i am lucky my car feels fine the steering wheel never pulls around but i do get tramlining nothing as bad as my last car so that helps and do not find the car that bumpy on the RF tyres OK it can be on certain roads but it absorbs the manhole covers and potholes a lot better than i thought no hard crashing through the cabin.

Driving mine home last night, I felt this a little but it is nothing that would make me change tires. I have the Bridgestones. I can tell you, being in the tire business that the Conti's are junk. We quit handling them do to so many adjustment claims. My point is, check what brand you have. It does make a difference.
