steering

Hi,
Just bought a 2.2 04 plate Z4. I tried several before I dicided on this one. I only drove one other which was a 2.5 and a year older. My question is has anybody had trouble with the steering feeling notchy when driving in a straight line.

There's loads of discussion on here about the pre-facelift cars' "sticky steering" , this is just one of the threads: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13838

It's a known problem which was rectified with the facelift models in 2006. Basically a heat-related issue, usually only experienced in the hotter climates, or in cooler countries (like the UK) when driving reasonably long distances with the heater on high in the footwells. The steering ECU on the steering column is right next to the heater vent and malfunctions when it gets hot, causing the notchiness you have experienced.

Try keeping the heater from blasting constant heat directly into the footwells on your next medium to long journey and see if you still get the problem

Welcome to the forum

As above, usually heat related. Did you buy from a trade seller, if so I'd be looking for a warranty repair if the problem persists.

Oh, and pictures of your zed are compulsory when joining the forum :P

:worthless:

Sorry, just noticed it was your first Post - Welcome to the Forum from me too  (come on let's see your Zed !!)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I am going to phone the dealer who sold it to me first.
I have a couple of questions firstly, I am off to Italy in the Zed to tour the lakes in June has anyone got any tips for me?
Second question where is the best place to get a wind deflector and which one is best?
I will download a pic just as soon as I get a good one.

Hi, the sticky steering is certainly a documented problem sometimes caused by the steering column on pre-facelift cars and is generally heat related, either external or from the heater.
However myself and several other forum members have cured the problem by lubricating the two UJs at the bottom of the steering column. These can be seen under the (UK driver's) side of the engine and are exposed. Mine were dry and cruddy, I cleaned them and used some heavyish gear oil, all was smooth with no more sticky steering.

But... if the dealer diagnoses it as a column fault and is going to do the work for free (BIG ££££s!) I should let him and have a post facelift column fitted :)

Hi and welcome

Best Wind Deflector is the OEM factory fit one, it's an easy job to retrofit, but quite costly. The are other options including a BMW leather bondage one which are cheaper.
