Steering

My 2.5 1993 z4 has had a replacement steering unit fitted.
However it still isn’t quite right e.g. does not quite self centre.
If anyone has ideas it would greatly help.thanks.viv thomas Portishead.uk

[ref]Vivian12[/ref] I see you're in Portishead. I'm down near Weston.

Firstly, don't take your car to Avantgarde in Clevedon for wheel alignment whatever you do.

Secondly, does the steering wheel ever feel stiff to turn?

Difficult to fully describe but feels somewhat stiff but not nearly as stiff as it was before the rebuilt unit was fitted.i no longer need gorilla arms but it feels like driving an older classic car without power steering. My trusted garage does not know what to do next!viv thomas
Thanks for the response

It may benefit from adjusting the ring on the steering motor, we like to see newbies Zeds too.
:worthless:

[ref]Vivian12[/ref] I'd echo [ref]road warrior[/ref] and recommend getting the tracking checked (and adjusted if necessary) before you go too far investigating a problem. If you KNOW the wheel alignment to be spot on, you can of course skip this step!

Did your trusted garage fit the new power steering unit then? And you've taken the car back to ask them to rectify the problem but they're not sure what to do?

Thanks for your response.
Yes the same “family garage” took out the faulty unit and refitted the reconditioned unit.they have done various checks but seem stuck.however I am not sure about the tracking.
I have read about altering. Ring on the top of the steering unit but I don’t know what this means or what it is all about.

I ha ejust seen the response from firebody about the ring. I should mention this to my garage.perhaps.
Thanks to firebody for pitching in.

A lot of us have been contributing to a thread in the Problems forum. If you haven't already read that Sticky Steering thread, I suggest you do that now

I should also say that I'd be happy to have a feel of the steering and adjust the ring if necessary. In fact I could potentially even do it today if you wanted to bring the car to my house. I'm half an hour south of you.

An offer you cant resist really, forum at its best.
Well done WD

[ref]firebobby[/ref] I haven't heard from him - unsurprising really when a stranger calling himself wonkydonkey offers to look at your wayward steering :driving:

The last time I spoke to my repairer he could not see where this “eccentric ring”
Was- for adjusting.i assume but don’t know,it is on the top of the steering unit.
Still have not solved the problem-if it can be solved,! I guess this is a design problem.what a pain.

I have the same issue starting to appear in my steering only when the weather is super hot - how easy is it to adjust and do I need to be a contortionist?

There's an extensive thread about this problem. If yours is exacerbated by heat, it's highly likely that you'll be able to resolve it by following the instructions in the thread for adjusting the ring:

Update

I thought I should come back to this thread to wrap it up with a verdict to help others with the same issue. Viv brought his car down to me last weekend and sure enough, with the front wheels in the air, it felt like sticky steering to me. Since I haven't carried out a sticky steering adjustment since last summer, I made the schoolboy error of adjusting the steering wheel to the fully UP position rather than fully DOWN, which made access to the pinch bolts unnecessarily difficult. I find mistakes like this are much more likely to happen while you're talking to someone or being watched, so I'll just blame Viv for that, and anything else I got wrong that week :D Anyway, I was able to adjust the eccentric ring eventually.

My oversight made the job take much longer than it should've taken - probably an hour or more - but the feel in the steering wheel eventually came back to being as good as I feel the Z4 EPS can feel. I've asked Viv to come back to me if he thinks it needs any further adjustment, but his was probably the worst case of sticky steering I've felt to date!

I tried to see where the adjustment is , I just couldn't get to it... I'll try again when my back is feeling up to it... That's a good tip to have the steering fully down...
