quick release
Bear in mind you won't be able to use the car on a TF nurburgring session with one of those (if they spot it).
I'll drop you the ncs coding for the light, I'm sure and will be interested to see that it will work on your car, as I said I think other things confuse the issue with mine..

This isn't strictly true.
If they see you with a quick release hub that doesn't have a button that you need to press before releasing the hub, then they don't allow it.
If you have one with the "security button" (I don't know the proper term for it), you should be fine.

As for wheel thickness, thin all the way!

this one has the security button, just visible at the 12 o'clock mark. This car will be heading to the ring likely next year, this year im driving over to Monaco this year in another one of the toys.

To be honest, I can't say I've ever really been bothered by the thickness of my steering wheel.

I'm more bothered about steering feel & feedback, and I find the actual wheel has less to do with that than the steering box type (hydraulic, electric, rack & pinion or recirculating ball, servotronic, etc.) and tyres.

i can honestly say the thinner wheel aids steering feel way more than i would have imagined.

Secondly - it added as a spacer and gave me the additional function of being able to snap the wheel off meaning above ingress and egress in my garage is much easier, i could have just picked up a spacer for the cost between the two was tiny, so i went that route. i went to the cost of having these awesome seats and i want the wheel perfectly spaced for driving and without the addition of the dish wheel and the spacing of the QR there was a definite reach issue for me despite being 6ft tall.
Fair enough, I think mine is roughly left in the stock reach position which I find ok, yours is closer for sure so I can see it might get in the way. I'm pretty sure I use my wheel to lever on to get out of the bloody thing :D

Lastly, its additional security for what is to me, a pretty much irreplaceable something i truely adore.
Have they stopped making them already :?

I think he meant the car is irreplaceable Tom!
lol, hadn't even crossed my mind! Yeah I guess having no steering wheel at all might help :D

Well I just pulled the trigger on a mod 07, delivery next week. It'll not be going on particularly quickly but I'll pop some pics up when it's on! Need to figure out the horn wiring and airbag resistor... Any tips on that (Tom and Byron) gratefully received!!

hi ed! audio team at work make me a plug and play loom for the horn and the airbag..... nothing was cut or modified in anyway, they then reset the light..... works as stock and the indicators self cancel as normal BUT the steering wheel clock needs to be modified which was a rather squeaky bum moment.

Hey Byron,

Need some advice. Getting bored so looking for things to modify. I was hoping you could tell me the exact kit you got for the entire setup. Also did you buy them directly from Momo website?

I am looking at MOD.08 330 MM. I was hoping to get it in suede but they don’t have the smaller 330MM size option.

Also on the Momo website they sell MOMO Air Bag Resistor, did this not exist when you purchased yours? Like you seeing the airbag light will drive me nuts.

Lastly what exactly do you mean by this?

Thank you

The steering wheel clock absolutely does not need to be modified - I fitted my Mod-07 same time as Byron, definitely did not need the clock touching (!)

If you wanted any detail on fitting just the momo boss and wheel then hopefully the thread I posted on that might help;

EDIT: FWIW I bought my Momo Mod.07 & Boss (the one you linked to above is correct) from Opie Oils at a significant discount over the list price elsewhere..

Thanks Ed for the feedback and link. Good to know i have the parts right. If you don't mind I have some follow up questions Ed.

1. The above air bag resistor I linked to will get rid of the air bag light?
2. Did this mod have an impact to your insurance? Being that the airbag is removed I am thinking this would have a big impact.
3. Any chance you can post a side profile picture of your steering setup?
4. What size Mod .07 steering wheel do you have? Not sure how much of a difference there is between 330MM vs 350MM in terms of impact on driving? I don't track my car at all, mostly on spirited driving on b roads but who knows might track it in the future.

Thank you Ed.

Hi mate - no bother at all :)

1. No idea - per my thread I used one off ebay (think I put a link in the thread to which one I used but just whacked in 'E46/E86 Airbag resistor' and loads came up), and one that was provided in the box with the wheel from Momo. I have had an erroneous airbag light come up in the last few weeks, but I'm more inclined to think that's something that's worked its way loose rather than the resistors being incorrect, as I've not had an airbag light come up in the 2 years and several thousand miles the wheel has been fitted, only just 2 weeks ago!
2. Nope - from memory I just called up Chris Knott and told them I'd fitted an aftermarket wheel, specified it was a Momo MOD.07 wheel and left it at that.
3. Yep, if this works see below pics )
4. No idea - I believe it's the 350mm diameter - I thought they only did one size MOD.07? It looks a little smaller in diameter than the OE wheel but not much at all. Personally given how quick the M rack is lock to lock, I didn't want a significantly smaller diameter wheel as it'd just contribute to the nervous feeling when really going hard.

Amazing. Thanks Ed appreciate the quick feedback. So surprised on the insurance part, might give my insurance a quick call and check. For the Mod .08 leather version they are offering 330 and 350 but not on the suede though. Understood on the resistors. Thanks again.

Pleasure mate good luck, it's a nice mod to do imo - the oe M sport wheels are way too fat in hand imo.

Fwiw, I popped out and measured my mod.07 - outer diameter is 345mm give or take. Depending on where momo take their measurements it could well mean mines a 335 wheel (if that take the centre of the wheel rim rather than outer edge)

For everyday I love the stock M wheel, especially with perforated leather. But more than anything, a smaller diameter wheel works so much better on track. And if you go slightly thinner, it starts feeling more like a go-kart setup.

Momo distributor only 40 minutes away from where I am and they are happy for me to stop today to checkout the steering wheels. Now the bad bit is my insurance will not cover this modification. On confused.com I don't see an option to specify steering wheel change, so when classifying it as interior change with no specifics the insurance doubles. I will give Kris Nott a call later but off to see the wheels later today.

Ask me how many times I've insured mine through a comparison site

They simply aren't set up to deal with specialist insurance - don't even bother. Chris knott have comfortably been the most competitively priced insurer for mine for a number of years now. Worth tying them and sky and Adrian flux

:D

I was with Chris Knott a while back not sure why I didn’t continue. Anyway have the goodies now, opted for the 330 MM mod 08.

Now time to look for new insurance tomorrow. Thanks for the additional suggestions Ed.
