Steering wheels- FAT or THIN? whats your flavour.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a mod 07, delivery next week. It'll not be going on particularly quickly but I'll pop some pics up when it's on! Need to figure out the horn wiring and airbag resistor... Any tips on that (Tom and Byron) gratefully received!!

hi ed! audio team at work make me a plug and play loom for the horn and the airbag..... nothing was cut or modified in anyway, they then reset the light..... works as stock and the indicators self cancel as normal BUT the steering wheel clock needs to be modified which was a rather squeaky bum moment.

You know the old saying, which works for all kinds of things in life:

Fat for comfort
Thin for speed

[ref]Beedub[/ref], thanks! If you’re at Zedfest this year you’re more than welcome to have a look

Any chance your guys could knock me up a plug and play loom too for a bit of beer money?

Is it the two spades at 6 pc clock that need removing so they don't click when you turn the wheel?

Here’s mine in a photo I took yesterday. Standard MSport MFSW dimensions.
It feels great, of course - but the more I look at it the more I think I prefer the ‘standard’ 3 x spoke thinner wheel.

i LOVE this wheel but i simply had no idea the fatness was loosing so much feel from the car...( ive always had oem wheels , and this wheel is the longest in my ownership) the porsche wheels are much thinner and so much more info come through the wheel, ill be honest i assumed this was because its a porsche ( mostly this is the case ) but wheel thickness really is a thing.

R.E the wiring bits...... id need to take my car apart for them to remake another one and we don't have the gap in the shop for a long while.... i must admit it was extremely helpful to have this done for me,

spades needs to be removed from the clock and rotated ( this may need the thing to be reset otherwise it sets off lights, god damn lights ) most people seem to have just accepted the dash light but this was unacceptable to me.

Aah ok.

I'm not in a mad rush by any means, if were able to work it out around existing work? I'd be more than happy to pay for the solution, as it'll save me money and faff buying and making something up myself!

I don't suppose you have any pics at all of yours during the fitting process? I'd be interested to see what the setup is behind the wheel so I know what I'm in for when the time comes!

Ed, i didn't take any pics as i was stressed , even more so when the damn dash lit up like an xmas tree!

Which wheel did you go for in the end?

i ended up keeping the leather unit and accepting its imperfections in the glued stitching.... Nothing is perfect, Nothing i do for work is perfect etc.... since the mindset shift im happy with it! lol.... Being hand glued, they are less than perfect , as is anything thats hand created. ( just like my vinyl and PPF installs ) .

You will LOvE this upgrade, one of my fave mods to this car. which Boss adapter did you buy? any plans for a quick release?

Hey bud, sorry didn't see your reply as I wasn't tagged! I went for the MOD07 in alcantara with a standard momo boss. Got a cracking deal from opie oils as it turns out - 20% off list! Gonna see how I get on before I look at a quick release - less wiring etc to cock up too

Will keep you posted once I get it (tomorrow), unlikely I'll have time to fit for a while though for various life reasons!

Bear in mind you won't be able to use the car on a TF nurburgring session with one of those (if they spot it).
I'll drop you the ncs coding for the light, I'm sure and will be interested to see that it will work on your car, as I said I think other things confuse the issue with mine..

To be honest, I can't say I've ever really been bothered by the thickness of my steering wheel.

I'm more bothered about steering feel & feedback, and I find the actual wheel has less to do with that than the steering box type (hydraulic, electric, rack & pinion or recirculating ball, servotronic, etc.) and tyres.

Glad I've not got one then, I won't bother!

Thanks Tom, will let you know how I get on!

I wouldn't either, mostly as I'm pretty sure the wheel in situ aids in/egress rather than hindering it. Maybe different in a cab I don't know.
It's been a few years but there's nothing complicated about getting the momo boss to work for the horn and certainly no need to alter the original clock spring housing.

Thanks Tom, also good to know. Buoyed by your explanation, if it's that simple I might fit the wheel in the eurotunnel on the way to the ring this coming Friday  (definitely joking)

I'll try and set aside some time to take some stage photos, just as there's very little out there by way of a guide on how to do it. Will see...!

I would :) (not joking)
Swap back your original wheel in june for mot (I think you said?) and clear code, then figure out how to code/resistor it properly after that.
Either way have a great time!

You're an awful influence! Might see if I can chuck it on then

Do I need to muck around coding the battery again if I disconnect it?

This isn't strictly true.
If they see you with a quick release hub that doesn't have a button that you need to press before releasing the hub, then they don't allow it.
If you have one with the "security button" (I don't know the proper term for it), you should be fine.

As for wheel thickness, thin all the way!

No, no worries disconnecting

Ah, I didn't know that. Still it's just another thing to potentially ruin your trip, not to mention if the politzei take an interest in the car, tuv certification etc (yes I know that shouldn't really apply for us). I don't really see why a quick release is useful for these cars. 🤷‍♂️

For me, two reasons... my garage is tight, and with the tillets its a total pain to get in and out of with the wheel now much closer to the seat ( which is what i wanted see next point ) Secondly - it added as a spacer and gave me the additional function of being able to snap the wheel off meaning above ingress and egress in my garage is much easier, i could have just picked up a spacer for the cost between the two was tiny, so i went that route. i went to the cost of having these awesome seats and i want the wheel perfectly spaced for driving and without the addition of the dish wheel and the spacing of the QR there was a definite reach issue for me despite being 6ft tall. Lastly, its additional security for what is to me, a pretty much irreplaceable something i truely adore. Three solid reasons to my mind.

ED - glad you feel confident to have a go at this, its really not that bad ! Cant wait to see pics.

gah, well Fedex have cocked up - apparently they can't find my office address despite it being no problem for other couriers.... So back to the depot to be re-addressed. It MIGHT arrive in time for my 'ring trip, but at this stage I doubt it :(

oh well, the OE wheel works fine, It'll do for the ring trip and I'll muck about with it when I get back!
