Steering Wheel Trim Peeling

The metal trim is starting to peel/bubble on my steering wheel. It's just around the back edge of the trim that I highlighted in this photo. It's only minor but it creates a sharp edge behind the trim so I want to sort it.



Does anyone else have this problem on their wheel and is there a solution better than spending £200 on new trim from BMW? It's probably unique to the "Sport" wheel and not the "M Sport" as those trim pieces differ.

oddly enough I have a little bit of this going on on my daily merc not my e89, as its pretty much out of sight I just rubbed off a bit to lose the flaky edge then put some touch up clear lacquer over it to try and stop it getting any worse , other than replacing the part as a whole cant really see any other viable option

You can purchase the trim without the buttons but it's still £180. I'll have a go fixing them up like you suggested then if it still bothers me I'll get new trim.

There is a YouTube youth “Joel” who had bits of his steering wheel replaced carbon fibre. You could see if this would address your problem?

I would try a magic eraser in the first instance.

It’s a mild abrasive, and may smooth it out.

Thanks for the suggestions but wrapping trim is a pet hate for me.

It's a shame they don't offer some sort of premium alternative with solid metal to replace BMW's cheap metal effect trim. I'll remove the current trim and take a closer look to see if it's something that can be fixed. Surprised it isn't a more common problem but that's reassuring that if I do decide to shell out £200 for new trim I know it'll last.

They weren’t wrapped - I’m not keen on the sticky back plastic either!
They were replacement parts- they replaced steering wheel parts and the DCT shift lever inlay.

I will have a trawl thro my viewing history tomorrow if that’s ok?
I do remember that he fitted the parts tö a 240i but the video suggested that there were pieces available for other models.

Glad you found it but sorry for the disappointing result,
It’s a sad time when a four year old model is an older car.
