Steering Wheel Multi Function Questions

I'm wondering what is the easiest way of achieving the multi-function ability on my steering wheel. Ive searched back in previous threads which has given me a few ideas, since mine is after Sep 03 I think it should be easier.

Hopefully someone call tell me whether I should bite the bullet and buy the retro kit from BMW (Pt no 65710304942 I think) or would it be easier to buy a 2nd hand wheel with the buttons already fitted and if that is the case what other items would I need to get it all working?

My stereo is the normal Business hifi model.

As always any advice appreciated, I'm hoping it will be a fairly straight forward job as I don't fancy pulling the dash apart!
:)

Do it either way, whichever you can get the bits easiest. One will cost more unless you find a wheel on Ebay, the other a bit of fiddling to fit the buttons to your wheel.

Hardest task is taking the airbag and wheel off. No need to recode or and 'dash removal'

Ok, cheers CJ. I think the way I'd prefer to tackle the job is by sourcing a 2nd hand wheel with the buttons already fitted (I know where there is one).

Assuming I get this wheel do I then still need to buy a lead to interface to the back of the stereo or will this be pre-wired and just a case of connecting up?

Cheers

If it's after 09/03 you are likely to have the lead already from the LCM to the back of the wheel mount and no need to touch the stereo. It should be just a case of changing the wheel and connecting the internal loom on the wheel to the steering mount.

If you don't already have it I can send you the PDF instructions to do this retrofit.

This should take 20 minutes of which 10 is waiting for the airbag after disconnecting the battery.

thanks again for the info. I found a copy of the PDF in previous threads. Is there a how to on the air bag removal as it sounds like that is going to be the worst part?

Don't know of one outside of the TIS. (electronic manual) It's basicallly just 2 spring clips, so if you look for the holes in the rear of the wheel you should be able to feel the springs with a flat blade screwdriver. Once on it push inwards and pull that side of the airbag away from the wheel gently. Repeat on the other side. Don't pull the airbag hard. It's a bit fiddly until you find the springs by 'feel'.

Once off disconnect the 2 connectors.

Fitting is the reverse.

I did this a while ago but I didn't go the extra mile to connect the paddle shifters. Apparently I need to purchase an extra part. As for the multi-function keys, I recall pulling out the instrument cluster and the device where you turn on the headlights - not sure what it's called. Eventually I'll get the paddles to work once a grow a pair and attempt to dismantle my car again.

I used this thread by Mr. Cj10jeeper to figure things out.

I'm definately not going down the paddle shift route - mines not auto anyway. I just miss being able to adjust the stereo from the steering wheel. My last car had this feature and now I want it back! :D

hi, i have bought the retrofit kit for £124, and would like to fit it myself. but do not have the instructions, somebody mentioned he had a pdf? thanks

Thread resurrection!

Anyone know what the current parts cost is for button retrofit to a standard steering wheel in a 07/03 car?

Also, any chance of the link to the cable PDF?

Thanks
