Steering wheel judder

Recently i have developed a judder in the steering wheel , i havent hit any kerbs ,potholes etc and the judder only starts to get bad at around 80mph(noticed it gets worse faster you go from 80 -- found out on the autobahn last weekend ) do you think i could,ve "thrown " a wheel weight ? or any other ideas on whats wrong ? yes ive checked all my wheels are torqued on tight lol any ideas gents ?

It could be a wheel weight, or a wheel bearing, maybe wear in a bush, or even pad deposits on the discs.

if it was a bearing wouldnt it be doing it all the time ? mmm -five , have you had any problems with bearings/bushes ? my car has 40k on the clock

martinb1966,

My steering judder recently has been caused by the the n/s brake pads 'binding' on the disc, this has been due to the brake piston's dust boot coming loose and all the crap and crud getting in has corroded the piston causing it to stick :x

Could worth a check

Sometimes you won't notice the vibration at lower speeds - otherwise every rotational vibration would be felt as soon as you start moving (including wheel balancing).

Mine's on 47k (IIRC), and I've only had a wheel bearing replaced (under warranty), which only became noticeable and worse above 120mph (on an autobahn in Germany, honest), and I regularly get a bit of vibration when I use light braking (which disappears after a while).

I've not had any bushes replaced at all, but BMW told me 25,000 miles ago that all my steering & suspension bushes needed doing - passed 2 MOTs and been for 2 BMW services without mention since.

I had high speed juddering on my last car.... turned out it was due to flat spots in the tyres - so the tyres basically went 50p shaped.... maybe check the thread all around and make sure its even?

The bearing of which wheel has failed?

Go for the simple and least expensive first - get the wheel balance checked. If its a bearing you may well feel excessive heat after a run around the hub but certainly would get before any further high speed runs (on the autobahn of course :P
