Steering Wheel Disassembly

I just purchased a Mewant leather steering wheel cover on Amazon. It is a Chinese made cover that goes over the factory leather on my 2003 E85 Z4. It is cut to a perfect fit and had BMW style stitching to make install easier. The part I need help with is removing the silver spoke covers so I can slip the leather underneath them. There are screws on the back of them but it seems that there is more holding them in place. Can anyone provide help? I’m guessing that maybe the center cap needs to come off first. Thanks in advance for your help.

They clip together aswell as having the screws. You'll probably break the clips as they are quite weak.

It’s easier to remove the airbag, less likely to damage also.

Just remember to disconnect the battery first and wait 15 minutes or so.

I fitted a Mewant leather cover in April '18 and for the money I'm very pleased with it. It looks great and is wearing very well. Also, I was lucky and managed to remove and replace my silver spoke covers without breaking any of the clips. It's definitely much easier to fit the leather cover with the wheel removed. Disconnect the battery before hand, 30 mins in my case. It can be tricky to locate the 2 springs through the small holes on the rear and fully push them in to release the centre boss/airbag. Just take your time and persevere, you'll get it eventually  20191124_213028.jpg
