Mine need doing when I get my Zed back, interested to see what that halfords stuff is like

mine was the halfords stuff, it leaves a slightly textured feel (soft) but i decided to go over it with some matt black i had.

the over all look and feel its almost like the hard leather on the zhp gear knob

Any reason why you went over the halfords stuff? Dont know weather to bother with that or just go for a normal matt black paint to start with?

its more of a rubber like you get on tools, plus tbh i missed a bit on side as has to re do the center one and run out of the rubber. So covered them all in black, tbh im happy with the finish.

If i was doing it again id maybe try satin black or just matt black and do loads of layers.

+1. Did you take the M badge off and refix it or just mask it?

Thinking of doing mine but reading the other posts it seems that the Plasticoat wears off quite quickly. Will have a bash with the rubberised Halfords enamel.

I removed it mate. I used a square Stanley blade like you get for windows & Stuff. Never made a mark, and then just re-applied with a bit of superglue, cant tell now & Is still the same depth in the recess as I left the adhesive foam on it.

What about the mf buttons do they come out or did you have to mask over them somehow?

I think they pretty much dis-assemble.

I'd leave the badge and mask it up, like I did in the write up above. Less likely to damage the badge or trim this way.

Haha you boy
Well I'm putting mazzer back together tomorrow
As had front suspension all off to powder coat
Calipers refurbished etc etc etc

M as I'm as anal as you it appears detailer Sunday to wed then 3m Friday for pro series wrap ")

And now bloody steering wheel controls haha
If can I'd like to take mazzer to classics

Antone done the steering wheel spokes in gloss, think I'm going to give this a bash over the weekend assuming I've got my car back and really cant decide what paint to use...

I've got the piano black interior so thinking gloss black on the wheel would match nicely

Sounds good to me buddy
As would tie in nicely
As for mine I think would clash so I'll stay Matt
Do it;)
Black gloss enamel would do it

i did mine gloss first, its very hard to get gloss right without access to propper paint guns , loads of prep etc, i did mine with Halfords Gloss black & you could see the sanding marks etc from underneath, so it bugged the s**t outta me, matt black looks a lot more professional (unless you give the trims to a painter to be done properly of course)

Think i would prefer gloss to tie it all in but not that confident in my spraying ability so will probably go standard matt

Doing mine at the weekend and bought the enamel from Halfords. Just wondering if the enamel needs a primer before you apply it and also if you guys lacquer it when you are done?

Got the trims off without breaking any clips. Achieved this mainly because the guy who had the wheel before me must have done this job and managed to break them for me.

Don't know what had been applied to the trims but I needed to use surgical spirit and a scotchpad to shift it. Cleaned it all off and ran some wet'n'dry over it. Couple of coats of Halfords Adhesion Promoter and a few coats of the rubberised paint and it all looks ok.

Managed to touch one of them while the paint was still wet and it meant I had to strip it and start again. :headbang:

Halfords spray comes out with quite a force and with the parts being pretty small it took a bit of focus to make sure they weren't oversprayed.

Decided on no lacquer - assumed that with it being rubberised paint there should be a need for it and it might not look right when done.

All fitted back on and I was worried a bit because when I was reassembling the bits the paint felt a bit "grippy" bit not that it is back on it feels fine. Really happy with the result. Forgot to do a "before" piccy but the old coating was through to the plastic on the corners of the button housings and the spokes all had scrapes on the old coatings. Much tidier now. To be honest I think I would just go for the matt paint next time but will reserve judgement to see how long this stays fresh.

Looks really good buddy
If get time I'll do mine but pushed for time

Bugger - starting to rub through already. Wearing where my thumb sits just above each of the controls.

Will try plain matt black this time with some clear matt laquer.
