Steering Warning Light and Radio Powering Off?

Hi All,

Had a very small glitch which briefly appeared on my 2005 E85 yesterday. Was waiting in a queue of traffic after driving for about an hour and the steering wheel warning light flashed on, the radio powered off and the power steering stopped working. All of this happened and disappeared all within about a second or so. I wasn't at full lock and don't have any symptoms of sticky steering.

The car has had a new steering column fitted in 2012 at the cost of £2300 at Mtec so kind of ruling out the sticky steering issue....

It hasn't happened since but was wondering if anyone else has come across this issue and what the link between steering and the radio be?

Thanks

Most random and apparently unconnected electrical faults all appearing at once on these cars is usually down to voltage issues, either battery/earth connections or more likely a failing battery, so is worth checking for fault codes, then eliminating these basics.

Just the steering light on and no steering on mine. Ended up removing the electric motor and sending off to ECU testing, who breathed new life into it.
No more issues since and I doubt if this is what has happened to yours, but worth bearing in mind if you do have the same problem.

If your battery is good, it might also be worth looking at the ignition switch. I found a salvaged part for about £8 and swapped it out in 10 minutes. My radio, steering, dash and interior lighting was blinking off occasionally.

Jolly annoying but so far and 10 months in(ish), no further issues!

Okay thanks all for the replies so far, it happened again this morning and noticed that I could make the issue happen again once I was parked up but with the engine still running at idle. If I turned the wheel I could see that the radio would either power off or just the back light dimming in relation to turning the wheel. So it looks like a voltage issue somewhere. Have not had a chance to test the battery yet, I think it was replaced in the last 3 years or so.
