Steering shaft

So I've felt my car has a slight tendency to need a little effort to steer off dead ahead. I've never thought it was the "sticky steering" issue in the column, as it eased when I lubricated the UJ.

Anyway decided to replace the lower wishbones and whilst there, pulled the rack, and the lower shaft.

I'm not surprised.... the lower UJ has a definite notchiness when moved, completely different feel to what it should be.

As it's sunny, And I don't have a replacement I've put it back together after lots of oil and manipulation , and it feels better, but Replacement is needed.

Anyone know if these are available other than bmw?

Raymond - thank you so much , I literally just ordered one from a BMW supplier (with bolts!) , dealer wants £280 - got one new for 180, so not cheap, but hopefully I won't have to redo the job.

I read your thread on hydraulic PAS - how did that work out for you in the end? feel good?

Sadly not. I had a few electrical issues so decided to sell it. The car was lovely one of the best car's I have owned but the complexity of the electrics was just too much. Instead I bought a Z3 2.2. It is a much simplier car with less things to go wrong. One day I will get another for sure but for now I will stay with the Z3. My own car was sold on ebay. I was offered £2850 to end the auction early so I took the cash. Felt I had let the car go for too little money. Anyway the dealer had a new MOT and a full BMW service done. Put it on Ebay and it went for £2850. Had I known I was tempted to buy it back !
