Steering Replacement

Whilst I was removing the steering wheel to send to Royals I was having a nightmare getting the main nut undone.

After 30mins of trying it finally came free and in my excitement forgot to unplug the steering wheel controls at the top before pulling the wheel off - I am an absolute idiot I know.

When I pulled the wheel off the below middle section came out and unravelled a long flat wire system. I tried my best to carefully place it back, but I finally got around to taking it out for a test drive today and my wheel doesn't lock, it just keeps turning and I've no steering wheel controls.

Time to get out your multimeter and start doing a continuity check, at least for the cable.
Can't advise re. your steering lock.
Good luck fella!

The switch unit is easy to replace and costs only about 30 £. The indicator and wiper stalks can be moved over from the old one.

Thanks buddy, that's what I was hoping. :)

Don't feel too bad about it, I did almost exactly the same on my E85.

When changing steering wheels, I put the new wheel on, connected the wires, not yet put the screw back in, but then repositioned the wheel to make access easier - undo the lever, push wheel up, pull wheel back towards me, off it came pulling the wires with it and hence the clock spring - which is the part you've shafted.

Literally just sat there with it coiled in the footwell - quite funny looking back.

Luckily I had one in the loft so it was a 5 min fix, but would have been really annoyed if another visit to Ebay was required!

Might be able to fix it!!! :) :) :) :)

Turns out you can just buy a new unit:

I've got this clock spring assembly and stalks spare in good condition, you're welcome to it if you haven't bought already.
Postage and a small forum donation if you feel like it.
