Steering Rattle after EPS Motor Removal.

Hi all,

I've managed to get the EPS motor out and repaired but upon reinstalling it I've now got a rattle just behind the wheel, almost as if it's right behind the airbag, oh and the audio control bottons don't work anymore. Great.

Hugely frustrated with the car now as its quite literally cost me a hell of a lot of money and effort to get it to where it is now, basically from scrap, so I'm thinking I'll just take it into an indi specialist rather than get myself any more worked up and start to resent the car.

Before I do, can anyone suggest what it could be and anything I can do? I had toyed with the idea of removing the column completely and replacing it but after paying £299 for the EPS motor refurbishment I now can't find a column without the motor attached (obviously I don't need 2 motors).

Rattling occurs when going over cobbles or uneven road surfaces, sounds like a thin flap of hard plastic or metal, like a thin door hinge bouncing up and down.

This stops when the wheel is turned in either direction, as far as I can tell it only happened when the wheel is straight

Any and all advice welcome but I'm starting to think it's another mechanic bill coming my way.. :headbang:

Thanks guys.

Paul.

Good to hear that you got the motor repaired and well done for having a go... it's very easy to get at, isn't it
If it wasn't making the noise before you took it apart and it's coming from the steering wheel, then it's something you have done.
Remove the wheel and check everything is in the correct place.
The stereo function operates via a plug in cable, check it's plugged in ok
I believe the cable is easily damaged, do a search.
And don't let it best you, you've done quite a complex job on your car.

Could it be the steering angle adjustment arm? When i adjusted my steering i got an annoying rattle until i realised that i had not pushed it back fully, although the column never moved which was lucky

Hope it is as simple as this for you mate.

Cheers, tug
