I have been rather confused by this.

Road and Track have this at 14.7 with 2.8 turns lock to lock
EVO has it at 12.8

The new 1M is 12.5:1 with 2.2 turns lock to lock...

what is the right number? Does anyone know? thanks

It's the same rack as the CSL, so worth checking what that is supposed to be
I'm not sure it is, the steering on my CSL requires more lock than the z4m ever did. I regular have to cross my arms in the m3, never did it once z4.

Hmmm, I'd read previously that they were a shared part, but a quick bit of googling has conflicting answers on that. Not driven a CSL myself so your experience sounds as if they are different racks toplad. I thought the rack was way too slow on the E46 M3, and really like the quick the rack on the Z4M. Sorry, none of that helps answer the OPs question!

it's all over the place.
Hopefully, someone will have the answer.
One thing is sure, the z4mC has way faster steering than my old z3mC

I prefer the quicker rack in the Z4M, or at least the quicker feeling rack, if it's the same ratio. I suppose if the wheels smaller in the Z4M it will feel quicker too.

EVO has the right number... Our steering rack was the quickest ever fitted to a production BMW before the appearance of the 1M Coupe. I'm not sure that having an even quicker steering rack is a good thing as it makes the car twitchy on the limit.

Wait isn't the steering slightly different between the Z4MC and the Z4MR also?

For thread completeness sake of course.. We've had this before... :)

You might be right!

According to realoem, they're all different (Coupe, Roadster, CSL, M3):
