STEERING RACK

Hi
I have a 2004 E85 2.2i with a worn steering rack...I know the rack itself is actually completely manual with an electric motor placed on the column driving it, so sourcing a replacement rack is an easy task as is replacing it on the car but, my question is will the existing column motor throw up an error regarding the replacement rack?
I presume I will have to reset the steering angle sensor and have the wheel alignment done
I also have a 3 series with eps but on that the electric motor is on the rack itself and needs coding if changed so I'm hoping with the electric motor being separate from the rack with no electrical connection between them what so ever on the Z4 it will be as they say plug and play.
Any body done this or have any input?

I replaced my rack a few years ago, and there was no problem with the electronics. There is no electronic communication between the ECU of the steering column motor and the rack. Perhaps wise to disconnect the battery and leave the steering wheel locked straight ahead when you replace the rack. You will also need a new bolt for the lower steering column coupling as they are single use only.
