Steering problem ?

personally I think it's very obvoius when it's the steering, It feels like a detent in the steering column and you have to force it out slightly to change direction then the same thing happens again in a different position !

I am totally agree with you. You are 100% good here that you have to force it out slightly to change direction then the same thing happens again in a different position.

doesnt sound like what I have. Mine is more a jolt in the steering that pulls the car in a different direction. Quite nerve racking at times as it often pulls me towards a car coming the other direction.
 
Sticky steering is best described as the power assist feels like it's going to sleep, then waking up as you put pressure on. It doesn't cause tram-lining.

As the others said, change the front tyres, then suspension bushes etc. if that doesn't sort you out.
 
The point made above, nobody has said sticky steering causes tramlining, but the effects of sticky steering are regularly confused with tramlining. If you don't know what's causing the problem or haven't experienced tramlining before it would be very easy to mix them up. They aren't dissimilar.

I feel I am in a fair position to judge as my car previously had RFTs, has sticky steering issues (intermittently) and I've experienced tramlining in other cars with RFTs on certain roads.
 
Hello I have just joined the forum because I have this same steering problem and I'd love to get it fixed. Pointing straight ahead, the steering wheel jerks left and right, some times quite violently. It seems worse at 65mph. I don't have run flats, but as changing the tyres seemed to fix it for one car, could this mean the wheels need balancing?

I did change the lower wishbone rear mounting bushes, but that didn't improve things at all. On the A14 near where I work there is a big rut in the road caused by lorry tyres and the car is almost undriveable, it's like a skalextric car. I'm sure it's fixable. I don't think BMW would make cars that were all like this?
 
I am also having the same problem, the steering wheel pulls left to right even on smooth road surfaces. I have noticed it is less violent if I turn the sports button off. I have non RFT tyres, changed front bushes, track rods, had the tracking checked twice, had a service last week and got the garage to check it out and they couldn't spot anything. Not sure what else to try... rear bushes, steering rack? I have the same size front and rear wheels so might swap them over and see if that helps.

Its called tramlining - My Z behaves like this on 18" wheels, and the probkem disapears when I switch to 17" - either track or winter ones.
