Steering problem ?

Hi guys, ive had my z4 2006 3.0si for a few weeks now and have serious concerns over the steering. On anything but the flattest and smoothest roads its fighting me all the time trying to pull left and right. Its not the typical behaviour from stiff suspension etc either. Wheel alignment has been done recently so its not that. Is there any known issues with the servotronic steering that could cause this ?

EPS can cause this as well. When my EPS got hot, it was quite wayward in the dead ahead position with a fir amount of knottiness!

Dont think I have run flats. To be honest I cant see this level of tramlining being down to run flats. I know they cause a level of twitchiness but this is way beyond that.

Is there a way of checking the eps ?

I think that absolutely is your issue. The amount of tramlining caused by RFTs should never be underestimated - a mix of both is only going to be worse. Ditch the RFTs before anything else. :driving:

Remember having exactly the same problem. As everyone has suggested, ditch the run flats especially as they are Bridgestone. You'll notice the quantum improvement as you drive away from the tyre fitters not only because tramlining has disappeared but also the ride will be much more comfortable.

From experience, RFTs will possibly be part of the issue but what you are describing sounds to me like it is probably going to be the infamous sticky steering issue these wonderful cars suffer from.

Ok thanks guys ill try that before I do anything else.

maybe just change the front tyres first to see If it fixes it(I'm sure it will) It'll save you some money ??

What makes you sure that changing the front tyres will fix this? The cars are known for having sticky steering issues and what the OP is describing isn't exactly your normal tramlining, fighting to pull left and right on anything but a perfect road isn't really tramlining at all.

I would like to add though, I very much hope the removal of the RFT tyres does sort your problem. I guess I'm just a glass half empty type of fella when it comes to cars!

I'm not sure, nobody can be over the internet,It's his call at the end of the day, as he said he was going to change the tyres , I suggested...well you know the rest :)

You're right on that, I guess I now have a sticky steering complex  Hopefully ditching the RFTs sorts it, if not then he will know it's a sticky steering issue. Either way, changing the RFTs will tell him what his issue is. Win, win (sort of  )

Phil...

Did you get yours sorted yet ? last post I remember you got some drills etc. from MM to do a job !!

Mine has trouble very occasionally in the summer or when I have the heater on full blast, but I can live with it ..unless it gets worse !

In the end I actually decided to put that job on hold, largely because of what you just said, I can live with it. I read some other lads doing big, expensive jobs replacing steering columns etc and that sorted it.

Im having the exact same issues with my E85 3.0. It gets much better with sport mode on, as it decreases the EPS assist, making the steering heavier.

It currently has Bridgestone RFT's all round. Im having all four tyres replaced tomorrow to non RFT's. Ill let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies guys. In going to try replacing the front tyres and hopefully that will tell me what the issue is. I hope its not the sticky steering issue. I thought that was more a pre 2006 issue ?

personally I think it's very obvoius when it's the steering, It feels like a detent in the steering column and you have to force it out slightly to change direction then the same thing happens again in a different position !

I am totally agree with you. You are 100% good here that you have to force it out slightly to change direction then the same thing happens again in a different position.
