Squeaking can certainly accelerate wear.
A squeak is a resonance were 2 parts are rubbing against eachother in a pulsating movement where peak pressures on the material are higher than were it a smooth manner.
Squeaky steering noise can also come from the steering rack where the outgoing rods are in need of lubrication. With no lubrication and squeaking over and over the tolerance between rod and slidebearing can increase resulting eventually in a situation that extra grease won't work anymore and then you need to replace your steering rack.
Too little lubricantion on those outgoing steering rods results in the 'foghorn effect', like you can hear in the video below

For the 'foghorn fix' you have to remove the inner clamps from the bellows at the end of the steeringrack and lubricate the rack.
Put a big dab of ball bearing grease on there.
I think this guy used copper grease but copper grease is more of an antiseize than a lubricating grease (although it of course also contains grease, apparantly it did the job)
The camps on those bellows aren't 'jubilee style' hoseclamps but more of the cv joint style. These type of clamps keep tension also when the rubber below forms to the hoseclamp.
There are special types of pliers to crim them for cheap on ebay.

Mine started making the foghorn noise today. First time I’ve heard this. The car hasn’t moved since November, so don’t know it it can come as a result of inactivity?
Yeah mine was honking recently, then stopped.
Might get the mechanic to look at it at the next service.

Mine hasn’t stopped so I’ll have a go at the ‘fix’ discussed above and see it that works.
