Steering Knackered - Help

Morning Folks

Looking for some help/advise or the number for the Samaritans !! Here goes. Bought Z4 3.0 53 plate soft top on a private sale last May with a 12 months MOT { must have been his besets pal that done the MOT for him} had some issues that were sorted out and the car was running great. 2 weeks ago 4 days before we were heading to France with her the steering light came on and no power steering. Took to my trusted mechanic and he informs me that its dealer only part and they were quoting £2140.00 + Vat for the part. {cars worth maybe £4500 - £5000} Glasgow company managed to source a unit about 3 months back from Amsterdam but they've no units at the moment.

Just had her in the paint shop getting the odd scrape and front bumper touched up for the holiday, and was looking great.

Dilema : whats my options ? Does anyone know of anyone out there who can help ? Or been there themselves ?

Any comments or number for Samaritans would be really really appreciated

Many Thanks

Bully Jock

are you dealing with an indie in Glasgow ? I've used a couple but most impressed with Deutschtek ( off Woodlands Road) - you might need to source a used part to save cost - perhaps not ideal I know - is this for the entire steering rack etc. ? Can they not better identify what specific component is faulty ? I'm sure someone with more technical knowledge than me can comment. Good luck anyway.

That's the dreaded torque sensor mate :o Try full lock both ways, with engine running, turn off, wait a few minutes then turn on again. It sometimes rights itself. My indie did that when mine threw the light and not had it come back since. (touch wood)

I had a weird problem with mine. the sport button wouldnt work and no power steering. first thing is although its dead heavy dont worry the steering is electrically assisted only and you can drive it fine without if you need to get it somewhere. Anyway i would check the power cable for the servo if you haven't already. take the cowls off under the dash so you can see the wiring and locate 2 really thick wires. i think they are red/brown this goes up into a plug.they are quite obvious. make sure this is properly connected.

on mine it looked fine and the male/female part of the plug was located correct but they just were not making contact. as soon as i pushed them together correctly the whole system was fine. hopefully this has been checked but if just a visual check was done then easily missed as it looked fine. I put a little tiewrap around the 2 halves and its been fine since.

Not questioning your mechanics advice but I'de want to know more about the exact problem before parting with £thousands to simply swap-out a complete column assembly. Others have sorted similar issues with fixes like fuses, wire harness damage, iffy connector plugs, steering angle sensors or just a re-set as mentioned. At least a complete loss of PAS should be easier to correctly diagnose than an intermittent problem.

Some detailed breakdowns of the column unit http://www.bmwclub.lv/files/06_E85_Chassis_Dynamics.001.pdf
The EPS lght signifies either,
- Fault in the EPS Control Module (integral needs full column assembly) or an associated control module
- Undervoltage/overvoltage (battery/fuse/wiring/plug)
- Overloading of EPS (seizing rack/column/UJ's)

Thanks Chaps

Picking her up from the mechanic this afternoon and taking her to Deutschtek {Thanks Jax74} but i will print off the replies and take with me and keep you updated

Thanks everyone for the input
