Steering Issue ( Aquaplaning sensation)

Ok here's what's Occurring. 65mph and above steering seems to have a mind of it's own. It feels like the front is starting to aquaplane even when driving on a dry smooth road. I have had all the bushes and linkages checked both at an MOT test and by Mike at the ZS. Hunter four wheel alignment carried out and Uniroyal NON RUN Flat tyres fitted front and rear. Mike at the ZS Has done the steering column adjustment which has improved it slightly but it still gives me that Aquaplaning sensation over 65mph. I asked Mike if he could adjust it again but he said if he did then I would possibly start suffering from the sticky steering syndrome. What can I do ? It is ruining my ownership of this lovely Z4 :sos:

Just a thought but what tyre pressures are you running ?

I had this on our Z4, along with terrible tramlining on some roads. Changing the tyres resolved it. It was previously on Dunlop Sport Maxx RT 2 tyres.

My wife's 2.5i had a similar issue, though possibly not as bad as you are experiencing.
I had already noted the shocks were all the originals and planned to change them.
Did the rear ones first and the steering was 95% cured.
Did the fronts a couple of weeks later, quick alignment check (which didn't need a lot) and the car is now stable at speed.

What are your shocks like? The rear ones I did looked ok on the car, no leaks or obvious issues. But when I took them off one of them took over 3 minutes to move fully out after I compressed it. The other, I could place the piston in any position I wanted and it just stayed there.
The fronts weren't a lot better.

What tyres did you opt for ?

I'm assuming that the car passed an MOT in Feb the shocks are roadworthy and ok. :?

That was my point really. Mine looked good, no signs of leaks, nothing that an MOT tester could spot really. Yet they were beyond buggered!
If they can't see oil leaks or obvious damage, there is very little else they can do.

Will get someone who knows about shocks to have a look over mine and tell me if they are Donald Ducked

Fingers crossed they're not. Just telling you my experience to give you more to worry about.

Sorry the reason I asked is that it has been known for people to run too high or too low . I can`t think of anything obvious from what you have told us so maybe what enuff_zed has suggested . I wasn`t getting any major issues but I recently changed my shocks and when I took them off they were all hardly moving as enuff_zed said .

Ps Just seen that you are going to get someone to look at shocks

I would revisit the column again, personally remove the motor re-grease and refit. Still sounds like there's too much play. :driving:

What are peoples views on sending the steering column motor to these guys ? https://www.ecutesting.com/common-faults/bmw/bmw-z4-power-steering-problem/

If you had an issue with the motor I'm sure it would fault up.

It only takes 10/15 mins to adjust the locking ring a mm or 2 I would give that ago, plus it's free :)

I think I will go back to Mike at the ZS and ask him to re adjust it. It is obviously a trial and error sort of thing. I'm sure I'm not the only Zed owner who is experiencing this problem :(

Hi @blunderthumbs can you provide any update? I have a similar issue in my '07 Z4C - 65+ mph the steering wheel goes left and right on its own, like intense tramlining... got an alignment and wheel balance done and it helped nothing. Wondering if you were able to resolve your problem?
