Stealers confuse me?

Ok so for legal reasons I cant go into detail but having picked up a slight mark on my front nearside alloy due to the councils inability to use contractors who can lay even tarmac for us to drive on I am in need of advice.

Feeling sad, gullible and in need of seriously being depressed further I decided to visit my local stealers in search of a remedy for my marked alloy. (mistake?)

I wont go into the "yes sir can I help you" crap and the following insane reasoning behind my pending nervous breakdown but I am definitely left bewildered, confused and also confused.

It would appear that BMW cannot identify my wheel color as it is a limited edition BMW colour????.

Something wrong here. Had a 20mm scuff on a 326 that I wanted sorting. It's the little things that drive us nuts.

BMW Sytner did it for £65 whilst it was in for it's 1st service. Paint match was spot on.

I thought competent body shops had a camera now that can "read" a colour?

Maybe another dealer or a good independent repair shop? (they do exist.... )

Nor could they get a colour match when they had to paint the nose of my brand new out of the box 35is Sept 16 (a long story)
Apparently there was a paint change during the year and the dealers hadn’t been told!

I am totally bewildered. I know it is a problem because i bought my car from a VW main dealer in Swansea. They were absolutely fantastic but the rear nearside alloy had picked up a stone chip so they said they would repair it. When i picked the car up the wheel was perfect but the salesman said they had a hell of a job tracing the color code for the paint. They did however manage to match the color so if a VW dealer can do it, why cant amain BMW dealer do it. :poke:

This is what I was trying to remember. Spectrophotometer.

https://www.valsparauto.com/colors.jsp with an interesting short video.

I think they're quite common now. Not all BMW dealers have an on-site paint shop but I'll bet they all have an in house "go to" service.

If a dealer says "can't do it" it just shows they can't be a*sed. Plenty more that will though.

I thought that but the service guy didn't have a sense of humor? ................. Let me explain............ 50 yards away from my local BMW stealer is a main B&Q. I asked him as they couldn't match one of their own colors could he repair my wheel if i got the paint matched at B&Q across the road as they state that they can match any color of paint? At that point he walked off............

So being totally confused I am considering the following options.

1. Wheel repaired by non BMW specialist who tries to match the colour. £70
2. Wheels repaired by BMW stealer who cannot guarantee color match so repairs two wheel on same side. £156
3. Wheels changed to Black by BMW stealers, all four for £312
4. Wheels changed to match the car (Mineral Grey), all four for £312?

Advice please?

I kerbed one of 19” alloys and took the car down to my local alloy refurb place, they did a smart repair with a perfect colour match for £40, to refurb the complete alloy £60. Do dealers have facilities to refurb alloys or do they farm them out to sub contractors ?

My local stealers have their own body shop so they do their own for £78 per wheel.

Sorry what I mean was do dealers have the same facilities as a wheel refurb company I.e chemical stripping/ blasting/powder coating etc seems a large investment for the odd bmw wheel
