State of UK Roads....fecking sh!te!!!!

Hi Guys,

Had the Z4 for only a few days, and its becoming increasingly apparant how poor the roads are in my town and up and down the UK in general.

Its not just the sports suspension and RFT's! Trust me!!

I did a 300 mile trek back from the dealership when i went to pick up my car. The road surfaces on some of the motorways is nothing short of sh!te. I wince everytime i take my car over an exposed drain cover or 1-foot pothole. And soon enough i hear a metal shattering crunch followed by a clang!! :headbang:
One of the motorways. M40 or M3 i think...is just pure granite. Flipping disgrace!!!

It makes me ponder. Upon recieving my payslip this week i opened it up and looked at the tax i am paying.

wtf is my tax money being spent on? its defintley not being spent on the roads.

To hell with the speedhumps, bollards, speed cameras, ruining my towns streets. Give me a flat smooth road surface anyday.

They have also recently just installed speedhumps along a 1 mile strech of road in front of my house this past week. There must be at least 8 speed humps across this road. Why are people not up in arms about this? Not only does it ruin a perfectley acceptable road, it detracts from the beauty of where i live.

There are plenty of traffic lights that broke up the speed of drivers on this stretch of road anyway.

Road maintenance seems to be a forgotton thing..........or am i just becoming too jaded at 29!

Can someone explain to me why there are so many drains or drain covers on UK roads?

Seriously though I do agree our roads are bad in most parts of the country and driving a sports car highlights it. Try some parts of the EU where our money builds amazing roads

UK has THE worst road in europe - I think AA's done a research while back.

You know where the tax is being spent - its either on politician's second homes or ensuring those who cant be arsed to work doesn't have to work. If not, its being spent on speed cameras and speed bumps.

Or may be bailing out respectful institutions such as banks so that the bankers can continue to flow their champaign (which of course as you know is a vital life sustaining liquid)

Nice rant dude! Wait until you’re 35-40, then you’ll really hit your stride!

This is an emotive subject for sure! I know what you mean though... I ruined my wheels in pot holes – typically at night with water on the ground thinking it’s a just a surface puddle until a massive crash. Partly why I’ll stick with the 17”s. The corrugated motorway surfaces are something of a mystery. You could accept it if the roads weren't infinitely better on the other side of the English channel.

Manholes can be quite lethal if you’re on two wheels! Again, not in the road on the continent.

Next: I find worst thing about speed bumps on the road is the noise of cars accelerating between them. That said they are a necessity in some places – a road near to where I used to live, a 30 limit with a GP surgery at one end and a few day care place and even with the speed bumps people go hurtling down there... though one was going to flip itself over!

I might be wrong, but I think the little disk in the window is where the money comes from for roads... and fuel duty? They spend PAYE on other things! You know, all the... and the... hmmm... banks?!

Right on brother,

Che Sacrifice :guns:

PS: My experience has improved immeasurably by moving away from Bridgestone RFTs.

as CJ said it our money goes to other developing european countries to develop their infrustructure... you should see the roads in the south of spain... smooth as babies bottom. now road in my area... you think you're in a middle of an earthquake.

Worse for some BMW owner's it seems http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/watchdog/2009/10/bmw_alloy_wheels.html

That could be due to 18" and 19" rims being knackered by these fecking potholes..

I went backpacking round the world for one year. The roads in some parts of Cambodia were 100% better than those in the UK. Vietnam had some of the best roads in SE Asia. SIngapore had to have the best roads anywhere in the world...

If MP Expenses were stopped i'm sure we could fill every single blimmin pothole in this country!

My we are in a grumpy mood this week :) Wait till you get nearer to 60 then you can bitch and moan about everything

The roads, immigration, the unemployable, the health service, the young, the old, drivers, tree huggers, MPs, women, men, dogs, :headbang:

I agree that the roads in the UK are shite and that it is a disgrace with how much we are taxed just to put a car on the road, even worse is how little of it goes into general maintenance. However, with regards to our hard earned cash filtering into the EU you want to drive on Belgium roads! I would dare to say that their roads are worse than ours, its that bad you think your driving a bloody space hopper........

I am disgusted that i have to pay over £200 a year to drive on these ridiculous roads, they're not even worth paying a penny for!

Dont get me wrong, some of the roads in the UK are utter sh*t.. but we don't have the worst roads in europe - by a long way imo.
I've driven in Portugal, and almost all of the roads out there are just plain dangerous; cracks, potholes, disjointed segments, loose toppings.. the lot. Worse than there is Albania and some of the roads around smaller towns and villages in Greece, where sometimes it's nothing more than a dirt track with roadsigns.

We have crap roads, but it aint exactly the worst.

Then again, we do pay through the nose for the "priviledge" of driving on these roads, so by that I'd expect we had some of the best roads, not some of the worst :/

AND, to add insult to injury... how much time do we spend sitting in traffic for "road works" for no real improvement! :x

Okay so a lot are utility companies digging holes in the road to then fill in with an inconsistent (with the rest of the road) material that makes matters worse! (As Peddy pointed out, his road look like an earthquake zone – see sig. pics). At least utility bills are evenly priced! :fuelfire:

Why is it so bad?

Because cretins voted Labour and made them think what they were doing was popular, so they carried on!

We only have ourselved to blame really.

Dave

Agree, roads are utter crap. I manage to avoid knackering my wheels as I've been a biker since I was 16 so I am used to scanning the road ahead for pot holes, drains, gravel, diesel, and other issues. This usually means I thread my way round most things that others would drive over/into and give me and the Z a relatively easy time.Love French motorways, smooth n empty and I don't mind paying extra for that.

thing is we pay through the nose in this country and still get nothing in return, at least in france they dont pay any car tax and the diesel at least is about £1 per gallon cheaper than ours, and they dont have to creep along at 70mph.

No they pootle along at 80.78mph (68.35kph in the rain), unleaded costs a lot more, and a shitload more once you've added in the cost of the tolls.

Having said that, having a motorway to yourself in the middle of summer, as far as the eye can see, has its benefits...if only they weren't so straight and boooooorrrrring....(north/south anyway)...
