Startup issues

Hey guys, I have an issue in my e86 coupe where I go to start and sometimes it just rattles instead of starting or starts with a rattle which can be heard. Anyone experience this before? Any ideas what it could be? It usually starts fine when I turn it off and try again

The rattle is only on startup and goes away once the engine is on.

Mine sometimes revs quite hard on start-up causing a short rattle before the oil is up to pressure. Is there a way of controlling this behaviour? It only seems to happen in cold weather

Doesn't sound good, could be an air leak some where ? Not good for a cold engine to rev hard when cold.
On start up from cold, my Zed has a split second rattle and then settles to a purr.

Sounds like the starter motor is on it's way out.

Thanks guys,
Is there a chance it could be the ignition switch? Or could it be the flywheel (I have auto trans)? If it is the starter is there a chance that it could mess up the flywheel if I don’t get it changed ASAP? Or can it wait for a while till I manage to save and buy the starter (if it’s on its way out then I’m not too fussed if the starter is further damaged, just don’t want the flywheel to get damaged)..

Also not sure if this is related but prior to this happening I also noticed at times that there would be a delayed start, ie., I would turn the key to the “on” position and it would take a second or so before starting instead of cranking instantly as I turn the key.

Edit: is the starter hard to change diy? I’ve done quite a few things before on old cars (oil changes, thermostat, coolant shocks etc)

Never done one on a zed, other on here have though. I think they are a bit tricky but doable for a man of your caliber

changed my starter motor a few months ago. A fairly simple job once you have taken off the air filter box.

Hithere, I have been experiencing similar issues on my M coupe, sometimes like you i turn the key and nothing happens or sometimes it is perfectly normal. Sometimes i hear a click and sometimes nothing. Is yours a daily driver or is it like mine and sits for 3 or 4 weeks unstarted and undriven ? I did 900 miles only last year and things seem to play up when not driven.
Still dont know if it is the starter as havent removed or tested as some on here suggested ignition switch as a pos cause. I have found an oe starter for £165.00 so will probably change to eliminate that. People have suggested to get a s/h ignition switch from a breaker but that goes against my nature as I would worry that that too could have issues due to being old and used. I havent priced a new one , it may be that they are not available or hiddeously expensive and that is why people go the used route. Any advice welcome. Good luck with yours and whoever fixes it first will hopefully post and help the other one sort theirs .

Hey guys, I've embedded a video showing what happens sometimes when I try to start the car. This is intermittent and usually when car has sat for a while (at least 10 or so mins), but I'm really concerned it could be the flywheel (have an auto so flexplate?)... The only thing which makes me think it's not the flywheel is when I drive the car a bit and then turn it off I can restart it multiple times (I think I've tried like 10 times in a row) with the car starting fine, it's only when the car has sat for a few mins. I'm really hoping it's just the starter motor but if it is the flexplate does anyone know how much it would roughly be to replace?

Mine has been doing this for as long as I have had the car (four years). I have replaced

The battery
The starter motor
The ignition switch.

It still does it now and again and nobody can tell me why. There are no stored error codes when this happens.

Last year I left it with an auto-electrician for three days and he couldn't get it to do this. I had the car back for a day
and guess what ? Click, lights, no crank.

I have just learned to live with it.

Any reason why you have used Facebook for your video instead of uploading to Youtube and linking to that??? Anyway, can't view it but be amazed if it wasn't your starter (starter solenoid to be exact). Can't see the flywheel being of any concern.

Whoops! Sorry guys, I've uploaded the video to youtube, please check it out below.

Thanks!

Originally thought it was starter motor, however after watching your video I am starting to sway more to a faulty fuel pump...

Really? Are there any other things I can test to determine if it is the fuel pump? I did have an issue leading up to this sometimes where I would turn the key and it seemed as though there was a slight lag before the car would turn over..

Don't know if this makes a difference, but the first time this happened was right after I left my car to get washed at a local car wash place... (left it there before without any issues and it was an outside wash only, no reason for them to open the engine bay).

Here is another video showing a sound it makes when the key is turned to position 3 (not fully to turn on the car), is this sound normal? I don't think it's coming from the starter, it's under the manifold area?

Looking at your first vid, the starter engages ok and turns the engine over so doesn’t seem like the problem. 2nd vid is the disa valve reseting, It’s common failure point on the M54 but not so much on the N52. Fuel pump seems like a bit of a stab in the dark. Defo not a common failure point on the Z so very unlikely imho.

So are you saying the disa valve could be failing? The first attempt in the video you can hear the car not turning on and the clicking, not sure if it’s battery or starter. I’m going to test to see if it’s the battery by starting it with everything turned off (auto headlights are usually on) and see if that helps, so far today haven’t had any issues starting the car.
