I am currently repairing a crash damaged z4 Coupe, the car will not start under it's own steam just a clunk (normally has started x2 times), however it does physically bump start okay.

I have removed the starter motor and that spins fine, I have also just fitted a brand new battery now joy.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

hi zola .
your project sounds interesting but why not jump in as a newbie with some pics & am sure help will follow
btw / whereabouts in uk are you ?

Hi Zola

Check the earth on the battery, where it grounds on the body and the wiring off of the starter motor. I've had this on a different car and that's all it was. It would only show under load.

HTH

I will post some pictures in the very near future (including my slightly / subtly modified Z4M front bumper)

Re the suggested causes I will investigate these further tomorrow in the day light.

Cheers :driving:

Yes I agree with Stuart...sounds like an earth problem ..also check earth wire(cable) between the engine and the chassis, check for good battery connections ! good luck

In every starter I've replaced, several windings have gone bad. They still spin without load on the one or two good windings, but will not generally turn the engine. The starter is probably knackered, but do check the connections first, as that happens often enough and is much cheaper to fix.
