Starting trouble, no power getting to starter motor!

Hi Guys,

Going back just over a year now I had a problem with my car not starting with it doing nothing when the ignition was turned and not making any noise or attempt to start, this turned out to be a faulty starter motor solenoid that was not disengaging so I replaced my starter motor and all has been great no problems at all until now!

I got the same problem and replaced the starter motor again but now even with the starter motor replaced it intermittently will not start and it is like it is not getting any power to the starter motor at all? Any ideas what this could be as it is very annoying and I am finding myself sat in Aldi car park for 20 minutes waiting for it to fire into life.

It does not seem to be battery related as when it does eventually start it fires up with no struggle and works great.

I just want to trouble shoot this as I am sick of getting in the car with a 50/50 chance of it starting.

Look forward to hearing from you :) (z4 2.2 2004)

Also tried bump starting it and nothing... does this point to immobiliser as after i finished rolling I tried the key about 10 times and eventually it burst into life

Have you replaced ignition swich in the steering column? I am sure that is not so expensive..
I would first replace it, easy diy.

Second thing. IS there any fault codes in memory from EWS ..?

Where would I check for fault codes? and what is EWS?

I have not replaced the ignition switch no but just had a look and that does seem nice and easy to do.

You need inpa or dis for fault reading, or try to reach some enthuasist who has proper gear. All you need is laptop, software + cable.. basically.
EWS is immobilizer system.

Try another ignition key, I had a problem with the ignition key, and sometimes works.
I ordered a new key, no problems.

It seems to be the key!!! swapped keys and it fires up every time! God knows what was wrong with the other key?

So what do I do with the other key now? and will a key from ebay work as they seem much better value for a spare key...
