Starter surgery

Did not had much on my hands this weekend and enjoyed the cooler weather to have a look at my "lazy" starter. I did not have much to loose and it was a good chance to see what is going on inside and maybe figure out if a refurb kit is available (could not really find anything online so was hoping to find some part numbers). Getting starter in and out is tricky but I'm sure next time it'll take me a quarter of the time!

Well, the brushes have material left but are flaking, the current collectors are damaged too so rebuild kit is not happening. (ps: don't bother with holding the brushes in place with zipties like I did at first, a 22mm socket is a perfect fit to help slide them on the shaft when re-assembling)

I still cleaned up the electricals (chamfered brushes, removed high spots on collectors with sandpaper, cleaned and lubed the solenoid) as well as the gearbox and all the mechanisms and bushes and regreased it all to extend its life a little bit. It is all back together and cranking has clearly improved so it is a win and hopefully it can last until winter time when I will replace it as I don't expect the starter to manage cold temperature for another year :driving:

A strip down and clean up is the sort of thing I'd do. Looking at it I don't think you'll ever need to bother changing it now; it'll go on for years more.

I’ve got a spare in the garage. Plus one or two other things!

Easy enough to replace. Like the coolant expansion tank. Worth having spare and not needing…
