Starter, soldenoid?

Ive been having problems when I start the car sometimes it takes 3 sometimes 4 times..Eventually it turns on..I hear it wanting to turn on
..Im debating wheter to change the solenoid or the whole starter...Any input would be helpful before I go waste money...thanx guys....
 
I think you need to be clearer in the description.

Are you getting a click or clunk as the solenoid tries to engage, is it engaging and the starter not turning or is the starter motor spinning but either not turning or starting the engine?

Personally I'd pull the starter out and have a look on the bench using a spare battery and some leads before spending money.
 
Yeah it was definetely a clunk....I went ahead and changed the entire starter and put in a new one..Fixed the problem.Thanx
