Starter Motor Replacement

Hi folks, last night after work I got into my 03 plate z4 2.5 and turned te key and nothing...and knock on the starter motor with a hammer solved the problem and the car started. Does this mean the motor is on the way out and needs to be replaced ASAP or will it go on running and maybe never happen again? It started this morning first time on the key fine. Is this an easy repair, it looks quite accessible. And finally is this going to be wallet shocker! Ie special BMW motor at £250!

Any help much appreciated!

Starter motor is easily accessible on your car and I'm sure can be replaced in less than half an hour according to the TIS or Haynes manual. My motor failed at the start of the year but as I have a 2.0 it's a bit more difficult and I had to have it replaced by the dealer.

When I was initially planning on replacing it myself, there were a few new motors going for cheap on eBay and also for good prices on eurocarparts.

I'm not at home at the moment but I think I might have instructions floating around the house. If I find them I'll scan them and send them to you.

europarts have a one for £131 + 108£ surcharge (this is so u take the old unit back in for reconditioning)... plus if u use the prom code parts20 you will get 20% of the 131 ie 26 so it will cost u 105 when u have taken the old one back... not that bad really :driving:
 
Ok it looks like this won't be a shocker to fix, I will get one ordered from my local Auto factor and give it a go! Fingers crossed!
 
It's likely the solenoid is actually sticking as opposed to the whole starter going bad, the solenoid is 1/3 the cost of the starter. While it's out, you may wish to replace the entire unit so it's all done with for a while. Ensure the starter you get includes the solenoid. You certainly don't want to reuse your old one.
 
Just looked, it is a QH Starter motor.
