Starter motor noise after start up?

I've had my coupe for 2 weeks now and I'm loving it but just for a fraction of a second after the first start of the day there is a noise which I think must be the starter motor. Is this anything to worry about? Not too big a deal if it is as I have a AUC warranty but just wondering if this is a common issue. The car has 70,000 miles on it so I don't actually mind a few things needing replacement under the warranty! Thanks in advance.

Hard to diagnose without hearing it, but sounds like the starter pinion is not disengaging from the starter ring gear on the flywheel, once the engine fires up and it takes a fraction of a second with the engine running to spin it out.

Easy fix for the dealer to either lubricate the solenoid or replace the assembly.

Hi, i think i have the exact same problem. Ive tested mine and it only seem to make the noise in colder weather near freezing temp. Did you manage to figure out the problem with yours?

Not done anything about it yet but it's going back to the dealer next Saturday to have the fog lights replaced so I'll ask them about it then and report back.

if they do find the problem could you please post it up on here what they find. could help with my similar problem, cheers. Mike

Had a similar problem recently - worse on first start of the day and in cold weather. Worth getting it looked at as it is due to the starter jot disengaging from the flywheel which can damage the flywheel. BMW replaced my starter motor under warranty.

Is it kind of like a shreak for a brief moment? Might be the same noise I get on first start of the day. It varies in how loud it is (seemingly temperature dependant), and occasionally doesn't do it at all.

I finally got around to taking my car in to the dealer for them to have a look at this. They confirmed that it was the starter motor and replaced it under warranty there and then. Excellent service from Cotswold in Cheltenham.

Same here, recently had my starter replaced and the noise is gone, yay!

For reference, this is the noise I was experiencing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MmgKdQVbTY
