Starter Issue?

Hi All,
I've got an 03 2.5i and wanted to ask if anyone has ever experienced a noise when starting the car. It makes a weird screeching/scratching noise and does it just when its starting up. I would turn the car off then turn it back on only to hear it again, by the 3rd-4th time of doing that the sound is gone-so its very sporadic...

So maybe there's something wrong with the solenoid andor the starter needs to be replaced... :?

Would appreciate any thoughts on this....

Is this an instant noise or it has a duration of about 1 minute?
Do you hear it from the engine department - infront of the passenger's area?
In case of having this small duration and its heard from the engine as said before, then you are for the emission control air pump.

konas,thanks for the suggestion, went out to check again that noise...but its from the driver side. the noise is instant and only for 3-4 seconds long at most...
i've been trying to think what other things could be related and research it...but still having not as much luck....

I had the same thing on my 04 3.0i and the dealer replaced it under waranty.

Did the sound happen often for you before replacing it? With my luck if I take it in and they try to diagnose it, that sound won't appear....


Adam D, speaking of cat-just so happens a neighbors cat snuck into the garage one evening and was so kind enough to piss along my rear bumper!!!! :x Not cool...then a few days later that evil little feline did it to my next door neighbors car as well...I guess it doesn't like kitty litter.... :|

Some times the tension pullys like to squeel a bit after starting. I just replaced mine last week. The engine would squeel for 10-15 seconds after starting and then would go away. It did it for like 4 days and I had them replaced. All is now good.

It would happen intermittently, grinding sound like the starter would stay engaged too long (just a few second). They had the car for a week so they were able to reproduce the noise.

Mine did the extact same thing one day after washing it. (did not wash the engine bay). Sounded as if the starter would stay engaged for an extra second or two producing the same sounds you describe. Took it to the dealers and although they kept it for a day, they could not reproduce it. Picked it up and it has never done it again. That was about six months ago! Strangest thing. :? :? :?
