Start-up

I've noticed most of the time my car sounds pretty standard on start up. But on some occasions the exhaust sound is noticeably 'beefier'/louder on start up. It doesn't seem to be revving higher during these occasions either. I don't seem to be able to control the beefier exhaust note but would like to know if anyone else has noticed the same thing? My car is the 20i engine M sport.

I've noticed the same thing with mine - sometimes it does sound a lot deeper on start up.

Doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for it - i.e. it's warm/cold, left overnight - sometimes it does it. sometimes not.

Yeah, I'd love to know how to do it everytime because it actually sounds rather tasty! I've tried starting with the sport button pressed but this doesn't seem to have an effect. Interesting!

I'm pretty sure mine does this when the engine is cold. Does it every time I've been parked up for a while. If I've just been away for a short period and the engine is still warm, the exhaust is much quieter on start up.

im only getting 35mpg at the mo and that a mix of motorway and urban so you're not a million miles off :P

Perhaps the exhaust flap is open.

I thought the same so have been taking a peak at the exhaust and the flap always seems to be open on loud and quiet start ups. It doesn't seem to add up!

Does the 20i have an exhaust flap? I thought that was only on the 35i/35is (dual exhaust)?

Yes, the 20i has an exhaust flap. At least ours does.

Our e46 325i didn't have a flap, but many of them did. No idea why.

abyhing to do with the Choke being on??

Fuel injected cars don't have a choke. On most fuel injected cars, the injectors may pulse open a bit longer for a cold start. Some of the old systems like Bosch L-Jetronic used a cold start injector.

Thats surprising as I've heard the 20i and its quite quiet... perhaps because of this. My 35i at cold start is loud, but disabling the flap makes it very loud. Something that I loved at first, until I went on a short break to the lakes, and one morning I set off early for a drive. I started the car, then heard babies crying... oops. The flap was re-enabled quickly.

Heard babies crying.....that sound is a pleasurable to me as a loud exhaust....you must've been in heaven!!!!
