Start Up-please shed some light

I thinks one of the Camshaft sensors is faulty - i dont think the Z4 engines (or any BMW engine after the M52) have a crankshaft sensor due to the fact the VANOS alters camshaft phasing making it pretty useless... These sensors when faulty, will cause non-starting and stalling situations randomly.

You'll have one on each camshaft and theyre probably around £70 each. A decent OBD2 code reader *should* be able to tell you which one is the likely culprit... Either way theres no read harm in buying both and taking them back if theyre not the problem

They are very easy to fix as theyre at the top of the engine :) A nice little guide on here to try

EdButler, I cant thank you enoung!! Will take the car to the dealer soon. Is it likely that diagnostics will throw any codes or will this be a trial / error repair?? I can see that there are two sensors, which is the most likely? :)

A faulty sensor is very likely to throw a code yes, any half decent code reader should be able to read it as it will be part of the engine codes.

It could honestly be either cam sensor, but if i had to put my money on one, itd be the Inlet cam. This is the one most likely to effect ignition parameters in the ECU :)

Good luck with it

EdButler, Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on the issue :) The thing that bothers me is that so far I haven´t had any "check engine" lights appearing on my dash, thus making the whole issue a lot more confusing :( Next week Im gonna drop the car off for the dealer to check it out, ill also tell him to inspect the starter (used to have grinding noises when parked nose up) and alternator (whines as the car progressed to higher Rpm) :D

Ive known quiet a few people who have had Crank/Cam sensor failures and none have ever thrown an EML (Engine Management Light) so that kinds just confirms my suspicions a bit more! :)

As for the alternator, is this whine coming though the stereo speakers? A lot of dodgy aftermarket audio setups do this... Usually you need a capacitor in line of the positive feed to your amplifier should help fix it. A stock audio setup should not do this however as it should be integrated..?

EdButler, thats a relief! Definately the CPS from what I can tell :) Nope, no aftermarket stuff, only OEM :( It was the dealer who actually noticed while changing all the belts located in front of the engine... I thought its a normal BMW sound, you can only notice it when focusing on it otherwise the nice I-6 sound dominates :D
