Start/Stop very intermittent

Hi all..The start stop function in my E89 has stopped working. It is a 63 plate Hardtop. Everything else is fine electronic wise.I have taken my foot if the clutch, e-brake on but all to no avail. The S/S button is not lit up and I have no warning lights? Can anybody help please?? :(

Hi, stop/start is dependent on battery health and also length of journey, if these items don’t meet the levels needed then the function won’t cut in.

Every bmw I've owned with stop/start never worked that well in winter

I'd consider myself lucky if I were you.
Battery and starter motor under a lot less stress.
I always turn mine off when I get in.

Encountered the downside today though. Had to use it to get to work due to various car juggling going on at home.
Big fat safety boots not the best for pedal controls and I stalled it as I turned in to the steep car park entrance at work.
If the Start/Stop had been on it would have quickly got it running again and saved my blushes.

Probably the worst option ever fitted to any car, best thing is the off button

Was it an option? I thought it came standard on some cars, can't see many buyers ticking that as an option. It's just another item together with downsized turbo engines supposedly part of progressive car design all to do with meeting EU emissions regulations. I am glad my 2009 model doesn't have it!

Me too, pointless. Might save a gallon of fuel over 100,000 miles but it'll cost a fortune for a new starter or battery, alternators probably beefed up as well.

I didn't notice any fuel consumption difference between having start stop on or off on my F20. They say components like the battery alternator starters etc are beefed up but that probably just means it will cost you more when time comes to fix it!

It’s for lower emissions, cheaper tax for owners and lower corporate emissions for manufacturers. It wasn’t an option on z4’s

I replaced an E46 320td with a 123d with stop/start in 2008 and found it didn't operate very often at all this time of year - I think there may be a point when it never does once the ambient temperature falls below a certain level, but it measures all sorts of things like electrical demand, engine temperature, etc.

It certainly stopped operating completely after the amber battery symbol on the dash lit up. That happened before the car was 5 years old and a new AGM battery supplied, fitted and coded by a BMW Indy cost just over £250 in 2012. Then it needed a new starter motor in 2014 (less than 7 years) that cost £600. :(

After that I turned it off every time I used the car and I'd recommend doing the same! Or better still get it coded to never operate so you don't need to keep turning it off. It's not like the saving in road tax even covered the cost of the battery.

And I didn't notice a huge economy benefit. I did over 40K miles in the E46 and over 80K in the 123d and there was less than 1 mpg difference in the overall averages.

I don't think it has ever been an option - BMW just started fitting it to cars from a specific build date.

By comparison my 2nd E86 needed a new battery after 10 years and the replacement was £110 supplied and fitted!

Stop start doesn’t work below 3 degrees and as said above the other conditions need to be right also.
