I'm a bit too young for ToS, but I grew up on TNG, DS9 and Voyager and I am quite a bit of a Trekkie. I was not a fan of the new films with the alternate timeline and I feel Discovery will be going in a similar fashion which judging by the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the new films, is in the series interests.
I'm not too sure how to take the first couple of episodes, I'm willing to give it a try and will go all out through it but a couple of bits I take issue with. The phaser animation is a Big one. All startships up until the defiant had beam phasers which went in a long burst, not quick rapid firing ones! Did I mention I'm a bit of a trekkie? Also the ship classes, there was a potential steamrunner class which was the admirals ship, but didn't recognise any others which is a disappointment.
Although they have tried to cram in some well known trek pieces, LLAP and mind melds being two, they also seem to have tried to reverse Spock's upbringing a bit in Mitchell and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
Interesting opener, not entirely sure where it will go and they have already confirmed it won't be episodic like all Trek before it
