Pull off the door card speaker covers and see if you have speakers in there. That was the first place I looked and found they were blanking plates - I had the basic audio and just adding these made a massive difference
I'm also told the standard speakers are reasonably good.

On the advice of a local audio shop I simply conected them in parallel with the tweeters in the door mirrors by tapping into the wiring loom in the door. They advised that since I was running a non amplified system then it would be a full signal going to those speakers and would therefore work well.
Truth is it does and very impressive for what it is.
You will need either the genuine BMW speakers that have 3 point fixing or to do some work on the door mounting to make normal 4 point speakers fit.

No, if you want to do the same as I did, you do not neet to get to the stereo, just inside the door
Take the inner door panel off. You will see a black wrapped wiring harness going up to the small speaker in the door mirror. It is those 2 wires. Sorry I do not have the colour, but you just tap into those with new speaker cables in parallel. It's very easy.
If you cut the foam insulation remember to rebuild a waterproof cover over the speaker.
Do you know how to take the door panel off?
If not look here http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2450085 for a good guide by Ron Stygar

I wouldnt recommend just wiring speakers into the doors off the tweeter in parallel as this will halve the ohmes, thus cutting the output of the amp in half.
Then you could put a inline denon amp, with a three way hertz system, and that will sound unbelivably good, 9saving up for this myself)
