Standard Stereo

I posted a few niggles a few weeks ago on the E89, one of which was the standard stereo, well now that I have lived with the car for a little while, I have been able to complete some top down tests, yes scientific stuff (I am a Mechanical Engineer after all lol), findings so far are: -

1) At 70 mph with the roof up the background noise is approximately 71 - 72 db
2) With the roof down this increases to 76 and up to – 81 db in traffic
3) Maximum volume through radio or CD is 83 db playing rock or pop
4) Maximum volume playing classical music is 79-80 db
5) Listening to spoken word books, at 78 db (audiobooks) is practically impossible at 70 mph with the top down

I think the results would be acceptable (just) if fitted to a conventional car but to a convertible it is very poor indeed. With this in mind I sent a letter to the dealer to complain.

The service desk contacted me last week and requested that I book the car in for test and evaluation, ok this is good, however they want it for a week, yes a whole week. Being slightly suspicious of dealers I am reluctant to agree, I do not believe there is actually anything at fault with the system or speakers it all seems to work, just not very loudly.

I could therefore be responsible for a huge bill if indeed there isn’t anything wrong, so two things, what do you lot think? Does anybody else have the standard stereo in the E89, if so what is the maximum sound pressure level in yours? Ok that was three

Thanks

Why for a whole week, one drive with the roof down is enough, surely

The standard stereo is not great, I think in standard format only pushes out something like 5.- 10 watts per chanel, and it is BMW standard, not reallt designed for a blast with the roof down.

Couple of things that are worth considering, First is to fit two mids in the doors where the grills are, although it wont give you more power, it does seem to give out a more even sound and directly at you, the second is to fit an inline power amp, that would cetainly do the trick.

I have really boosted mine, two power amps, powered sub bass, 3 way component speakers to the front and new two way rears,

sars, I agree with you about the stereo. With the roof down at 70 (let alone faster  ) the stereo is hardly worth using. I would go with the dealer check. I do not think they can charge you for checking it. However, I can see no reason why they would need the car for a week so I would question them about what they will be doing with the car. I assume they are offering you a Z4 replacement while they have the car?

I selected Loudspeaker System - BMW Business (11 speakers) from Complimentary Specification Upgrade. I hope it will be better than standard audio system.

How many speakers are fitted in E89 if only standard BMW system fitted?

sars, Please tell us what the result is. :D

No new news at the moment, I have written another letter asking them to explain why they need my car for a whole week! As I also believe that there is nothing wrong with it I would also like to know how much will they charge me when they find nothing wrong - No reply as yet

You do wisely, it really is just pants to say the least, you know when you get a song that you really like, wham up the volume and it just goes fzzzzzzzzzz (technical term I know)

I only picked the 2 most expensive options from the Complimentary Specification Upgrade 2. Loudspeakers system is worth £555 (2nd most expensive option after Connectivity Package, i.e. £610). I now think I really made the right choice.
