Stalling

happens sometimes but without warning, can't always feel it on the pedal or noise of the engine. It just sort of dies...

Could it be a warning sign of something technical?
 
plug the car in and see if theirs any plausibility/pending codes showing, other than that im unsure, is start by cleaning the MAF unit.....
 
Aside from your own left leg... Its likely to be air intake.... So as beedub says dirty maf or throttlebody.
 
Under what conditions does it occur, I had a problem where it would stumble and sometimes stall if you went to pull away but then backed off the throttle quickly.

Was cured with a reset of 6 throttle bodies (dealer computer job), I think one or more needed to relearn the correct position for idle.
 
Think I experienced this too last weekend. Drive around for few hours, filled up then as I pulled away the revs seemed to very slightly fluctuate on idle so that when I pulled away the engine stalled. MOT Monday so may ask Stephen James BMW to reset the throttle.

You can just reset the throttle by switching the key in the ignition position for 10 secs then again a couple of times right?

Will do that and clean the Maff. When service is due I'll get the computer read out.

It mau happen when I have to use 95 ron BUT I'm not certain TBH. Its jsut that it happens in such random ncircumstances and with zero warning signs. :?

Does this work with the ignition key thing? Also, how easy is it to clean the MAF and is there a thread with pics?
 
Mine has a similar problem, when the car is warm (ish) and I go to pull away from a standstill the rev's dip below the normal idle and it's a bit hesitant to go, sometimes need to give it a rev before pulling away (no change there really :P). Might try a throttle reset. (Or ask BMW when I take it in for the emissions light to be fixed, oh and my broken seat :/.)
 
There is a lot of discussion on other boards about the CDV (clutch delay valve). Personally, I was embarrassed at first, thought I was losing skill, but it persisted even after the car topped 40,000 miles. One can remove the valve altogether or replace it with one from a good supplier like Zeckenhausen. The car is a much better experience after replacement, and my pride is restored.
 
(WARNING based on knowledge of other cars) You could try a bit of carb cleaner on the throttle body - just be careful not to interfere with the butterfly valve or you may have to do some sort of TPS reset.

Happens quite a bit on cars with dirty reusable filters when they're not oiled properly etc.
 
I'm no expert but I've heard on m3 cutters that cleaning the maf can result in running lean with disastrous consequences. No idea if true or not just passing on what I've read.
 
Mine does this occassionally when cold on cold mornings, and usually only after I've stopped the engine after a short distance after leaving home while I pop into my local shop to buy lunch on my way to work. If I start the engine from cold and completely warm it up it's fine, just doesn't like be restarted while still cold (starts fine tho). Noticed it last autumn/winter and this year too but in my case not a problem. If it's doing it when completely warmed up then yes there's some kind of problem, probably a sensor.
 
Might be coils, been having a similar issue although not to the point of stalling. When pressing the throttle pedal lightly on idle, the pedal would seem a bit laggy and when the revs would raise a bit and you released the pedal, it would drop a bit and you'd think it would stall. I replaced all six coils and the problem is now cured. Pedal super responsive on tick over again. Will do sparks too since i already bought them.

interresting. I think she's about due for a bit of TLC :)

Not fixed after all. It was fine for a few days but now the problem returned. I even replaced the MAF sensor but no luck. Really starting to do my head in. :headbang:
 
I would suggest you to clean the ICV (idle control valve) with carburetor cleaner.
You can do this job yourself. It's plain easy, but time consuming, as you need to remove the intake plenum.
With this occasion you can also clean the throttle body, if you haven't already.

I'll try that, how exactly should i clean them?
