staggered wheelset

Changing my tyres for the first time today and found out that they were different sizes back and front; front = 225 40 18 back = 255 35 18. Is this the standard set up for e85?

I hope you mean changing as in replacing instead of changing as in rotating. Yes, these are the standard sizes for the sports suspension package. But, the tires are directional and they can't be rotated. One could remount them and then switch them from side to side but with the camber of the rear suspension tending to wear the inner edge of the tires I am not sure how safe that would be if you had an emergency handling situation.

Road camber and wheel settings make it extremely unwise to rotate wheels/tyres even if it’s on the same axle for the reasons already stated. What does surprise me is that having purchased the car and driven it you were unaware of the different tyre sizes front and rear. :!:

Further to the other answers, it all depends on what wheels you have fitted to your car, it is quite normal for a lot of the 18" wheels to have a 8J wheel on the front and a 8.5J on the rear which would give you the tyre sizes you quote, so don't worry about it.

This is how your car should be.Don't worry that is has had some odd fitments done.As previous posters stated, fronts have narrower rims than the rears, so have narrower and slightly taller profile tyres.

HI again

sorry I meant changing my tyres to non runflats (all 4!) The fact that I didn't have a clue that my front and rear tyres were different sizes is an indication of what a complete technical no hoper I am. Up til now thw BMW dealer told me when I needed new tyres and just put them on. I took nothing to do with it. It was only when I decided that I wanted ultrac sessantas on the car that I went to non bmw tyre seller, and they told me about the different sizes. I wonder if it does anything to enhance the performance or is it just a posery type affectation/
