Staggered / diff profile wheel setup

For the ever constant question of what wheels to upgrade to (not even anywhere near decided yet)

Has anyone tried 18x8 on the front and 17x9 on the rear?
Just thinking about non 19's setup, and putting taller profile on the rear to possibly help soften the ride?

Any thoughts or experience with this?

17's wont fit as they don't clear the calipers.

cheers srhutch,

that puts paid to that idea then, was thinking about options for cross-spoke BBS RS style alloys, not many width options in 18's though, 9 width only in 17s, back to wheel browsing :)

They should fit on the back though, as the disc diameter is smaller and the caliper is too. 18 on the front though. Might look a bit odd??

might be worth a go then, was thinking about these http://wheelsworldwide.co.uk/wheels/calibre/vintage/spl

With regards to odd looking front vs rear diameters, just taking idea from older 60/70s coupes with smaller rear wheels but bigger rather bulging profile rubber, while the fronts are larger diameter wheels skinnier tyres. 18's/17's seem to be the largest diameters for the crossspoke style wheels, without going custom BBS motorsport prices

Never seen a staggered setup where the rear wheels are smaller than the fronts.

You could try front sizes on the rear like the winter tyre option, but there'll be minimal difference in ride softeness, but you'd lose lots or rear grip using 225 rears.

One option may be to put 255/45 tyres on the rear, which shouldn't rub, but provide a little softer ride - depending on which tyre you pick as some have much harder sidewalls than others.
