ST XTA coil overs - experiences?

Hi all

I’m leaning towards getting some ST XTA coilovers to lower and improve stability of my car. Currently on B6 dampers and sport springs - ride is initially firm but settles at speed. But it feels quite soft at the front end particularly so I’d like to tighten it up.

Seems XTAs get some good reviews but interested in views from those who have them on the Z4. Do you like them? What is ride like over undulating B roads? Any issues? Driving wise, my Z4 is mainly A and B roads as a weekend car, and I’m thinking of doing some track days too, but won’t be many as don’t have the time.

I know they’re not KW inox coated but it’s a dry weather car so I can live with that, and the adjustable top mounts up front makes them look very good value.

Thanks on advance!

I’ve got ST coilovers under my E86 and I’d describe them as firm, almost verging on too much so. I don’t mind a firm ride, nor do I wish for it to be a flying carpet. However, on certain rough surfaces there’s just quite a lot of harshness.

Build quality: the previous garage informed me that they were fitted in 2018, and they still look clean and function well.

Thanks Barty. Are your STs adjustable for rebound?

Hi Dave,

I’ve just taken BC racing coilovers off of my E85, and replaced with new standard shocks and a set of Eibach springs; I have to say, it’s much more compliant on some of the B roads around here than it was before.

I’m sure the BC’s would be brilliant on the track, but it was a firm ride even adjusted to ‘soft’. The chap who bought them is putting them on an E86 that he does track days in… much more sensible home for them!

I’ve no idea how the ST’s compare to the BC’s, but the lack of rubber in the suspension system and very firm shocks with non-progressive springs in the BC’s was hard work on poor road surfaces (for me at least)

No they’re not unfortunately. In all probability I’ll upgrade to a set of V2’s next winter, particularly for their increased adjustability

Thanks Trueblue - yes I have heard BCs are quite firm. I’m ok going firmer than I have now but keen for some adjustability so B roads aren’t awful. As the ST XTAs are basically KWV2 internals I’m hoping that will help.

Barty - to your point, the V2 internals should help with ride I’m hoping.

Know there is someone who got ST XTAs on his coupe recently as the place I’m talking to fitter them, but not sure that person is on here.
