Squeel/Screeching while coasting/engine breaking

Hi guys

E85 3.0 96k - Got a weird one - hearing a high pitched screech/squeal but only when the car is in gear and coasting/engine braking, i.e. no gas or brakes are applied.

It goes away if:
I'm accelerating
I'm braking
I dip the clutch (but leave it in gear)
Put the car in neutral and then raise the clutch and coast out of gear

It sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car on both sides, but I know sometimes the origin of these sounds can be deceiving.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Okay just did some more investigating and it seems that the whirr/chirp happens consistently when the revs are falling.

So I can rev the engine (no noise) but as soon as I stop there's noise all the way back down to the base rev point

Will pop the hood and have a listen with someone else revving tomorrow....

For anyone who has something similar, I stuck my head in the bonnet but couldn't locate the sound there, seemed to be coming from under the car. As I don't have anywhere to jack it up at the moment, took it to the garage.

Turns out air was getting into the exhaust causing the issue. Bolts holding the flange gasket were complete corroded and weren't holding properly. £300 to replace them as apparently you can't use aftermarket replacements and have to get approved parts from BMW, but has sorted the issue

So anyone else with the same issue - that's where I'd check if the same happens to you and the sounds isn't coming from the engine!
