Hi all

Never leave your car undriven for any length of time. its been one thing after another since stopped being the daily. :(

After TPS problem that cleared itself now getting problem as per video.

Car is running fine. Seems no effect on power or response etc. On some occasions after turning off ignition, engine stops, noise stops, then 5 to 15 seconds later noise resumes for a moment or two then stops again, like something rotates/resets after engine stops. Doesnt happen everytime. Initially thought was fan but I dont think so now. Mechanic cannot look at until next week.

Please help identify if you can!

Thank you

It’s always hard to tell on video clips.
Sounds like a tensioner or pulley.
But you say it makes the noise after you have turned the engine off??

I thought the same, tensioner or pulley but nothing obvious. It makes the noise while the engineer is running. Sometimes ceases after car warmed up but not always. However, its not had more than 25 minute drive in one go. Then on couple of occasions, when parked after a drive but engine running it continues. Other time not. On several occasions after turned ignition off, no noise, then 10 - 15 seconds later momentarily re-starts then stops again, it sounds like something was rotating/resetting after ignition off. But I dont know what would be spinning after ignition off. I originally thought engine fan but this all checks out.

Will be taking the covers off the engine on Monday and see what we discover.

Activate the water pump and see if that’s your noise.
Ignition on. Heat to max. Fan speed level 1 and hold down accelerator for 10 seconds.
This should turn the water pump on

Hi guys. Thanks for the replies.

Its electric water pump. That was replaced a few years ago and is working thank fully. "Touch wood"

After some work and initially ruling out the radiator fan, having now stripped some covers off, infact we discovered it is the fan. Explains why noise kicks in after car shut down but no obvious with engine shrouds in place. Partially siezed. Going to have a go at see if can be repaired but dont know extent of problem yet. Or going to have to be replacement part number. 17427519704. From bmw price is crazy. On the hunt for second hand of after market unit. Been a nightmare few weeks
