I would just use it for a while and see how it goes, if it's been sitting, things can dry out. You could try oiling the little UJ in the engine bay, but you need to use a spray tin with a nozzle so you can fire the fluid into the joint.

+1 on lube on the 2 UJ's as worth trying,

Getting some silicone spray up in to the white plastic collar/bearing where the steering column comes out through the firewall in to the engine bay sorted mine a few years ago and hasn't returned

Thanks firebobby
I've driven a few miles since and it's deffo quieter...and I've just oiled the UJ under the bonnet so ill drive it a bit more and see how it goes. The links on squeaky steering all talk about drones but mines like a dry plasticy noise....suppose I could turn the radio up

I'll get some silicone spray  spray from engine bay side or inside the cockpit?

A good squirt upwards from low down, looking back at the firewall from inside the engine bay where the column comes through

Thank you Ewazix...

No probs, if you are stuck for more things to try I originally read about various fixes on our friends at bimmerforums, but you will need some time to read it through!
