Squealing window

Hi all, has anyone else had this? the passenger window has just started to make a very loud squealing noise when it goes up and down. Same happened to the drivers door but only once. I have cleaned the window both sides and gummied the rubber both sides, still does it. Thanks in advance, Mike.

Window regulator? although normally I think it's more of a metallic screech than a squeal
Does the window go up and down smoothly?

Hi obewan, yes it moves smoothly, it sounds like it’s the glass though. It’s really loud and makes wifey wince. It only does it in the middle, not top or bottom. Is it an easy cure?

I had a similar issue with one of the rear windows on our X3 - turned out the 'squeal' was coming from the part of the guide channel that you can't see i.e. the part inside the door.

As the Z4 windows are frameless, if your windows are still making the sound with the door open, I'd suspect a similar issue with the lower guides

To avoid having to remove the door card & membrane, I cured it by the application of silicone grease into the upper guides (with the window down), then ran the window up/down a few times to carry the grease into the lower channel - repeated the process a couple of times and the squeal reduced and then disappeared. Then gave the glass a good clean to remove any grease that had spread from the guides onto the surface.

Sounds like PerryGunn could have identified the issue MikeyH, an easier and cheaper solution than the regulator as well

Thank you both, obewan and PerryGunn, I had wondered about if it had guides and my wife was on about squirting some wd40 into the gap. I will give your idea a go with the silicon grease. Thank you so much for your help. Mike.

Mine was the forward lower guide channel inside the door. A spray of silicone and it hasn't made that noise for 2 years.

It is the front guide by the hinge, I have sprayed loads in and it is not any better. I have left it now to soak in and hopefully run down. I’m a little worried about spraying to much in the door in case it affects the electrical components in there.

I used a thick silicone grease from a tube rather than a spray grease so I don't know if that will make a difference.

As you're using a spray, and given the shape of the Z4 windows, I'd have the window most of the way up and spray the silicone grease down the edge of the glass, then drop the window - hopefully the window will smear it down the guide.

Failing that, on the Z4 it's simple enough to remove the door card and peel the membrane back, then you can obtain direct access to the guide from inside the door - see this thread

Oh! Maybe I've been doing it wrong then as I have put the window down. I'll go and try it with the window up and hope this works. Fingers and toes crossed.

Good news  I left the window down for a couple of hours after a good spraying. Just went out to try it with the window up as suggested by PerryGunn, tried it first, guess what, no squeak. Can't be happier, thanks to you all for the advice. Mike.

Oh well looks like the squeaky window has returned. :headbang: I’ll try the oil on the runner again. Here’s hoping.

I know what PTFE tape is but not as a spray. I'll give the stuff I have another go and if no good get some. Many thanks

The silicone spray might be a bit thin, and I'm not sure PTFE spray will fare any better - as I mentioned earlier, it might be better to take the door card off, peel back the membrane and apply some thick silicone grease into the guide
