Squeaky Bum Time

I try to keep it at least quarter full. There are known fuel pump issues so this avoids running it dry and keeps it cool.

Never had a problem running the tank low. And the fuel pick-pickup is from the bottom of the tank so it doesn’t matter if you fill up at half-tank or empty, it will suck from the same place in the tank.
Sean. Car is used daily. If I fill up as soon as the light comes on, I will be filling up a day earlier every time (roughly weekly) rather than driving for another day/50 miles. Makes no difference to mpg obviously, just on how often I have to fill up.

I did read the handbook (well some of it.....) when I first had my car and I'm sure I remember reading that performance restrictors kick in when the light comes on to eek out what's left. :(

Really? I never knew (or noticed!) that!

I never go near empty,as while you can get away with it your getting too close to sucking up the s**t that lurks at the bottom of the tank, and then your into a world of trouble. :o

I thought that was an urban myth with modern cars?

Don’t see the point I fill up anywhere south of halfway - costs me less than £50 until it clicks off with V Power at most.

Trying to eat out the few remaining miles from the tank reminds me of when I used to run the Escort MK 1 :driving:

i dont see how it can be different today , crap and dirt gets everywhere what makes you think the tank is any differant ?
open your filler cap door and tell me how clean it is

Debris and moisture will sink and get sloshed about!
The filters will probably deal with the debris - but 1/4 tank is low enough for me.
As the car ages there’ll be more and more in the tank.

Fuel pumps pick up from the bottom of the tank as standard, so surely anything down there is going to get sucked up regardless. Also a reason why there is filters attached to the fuel pickup lines.

Which is fine if it’s just a weekend toy but that would be a pain with a daily doing 50 miles per day.

What I do find strange is how much fuel there seems to be in the tank when you come to fill up.

I've run my E86s down to 20 or so miles on the OBC, but never managed to get 50 litres into what is claimed to be a 55 litre tank. :?

All my other BMWs have been like that - presumably it's for the benefit of those who like to see it go below 0.
