Squeaky Bum Time

Pushed my luck a bit but got away with it. Miles remaining below zero!

I needn’t have worried too much though. Fill up to the brim took 52.3 litres so I still had around 2.5 litres or 15 miles (at a push) left :driving:

I don't fret when the light comes on, but I've never gone below zero (yet)!

Lowest yet was 5 miles in my 325ti and I bottled it even though I was only 6 miles from home.

There is always more range than it says - either that or the BMW tanks aren't really as big as they claim!

I actually ran out of fuel at the local shell station once. Had to push the car up to the pump. Just my luck a Piston heads mate caught it on camera.

My Z is weird, it really struggles to fill, the pump keeps turning off. I have to be very careful with how fast I fill it up, and then I only manage to get about 44 litres in it. I guess there is a problem, but I can’t imagine what it could be....

I sometimes have that problem when using Tesco pumps. Must be the nozzle and the angle of the dangle

Maybe it is Tesco pumps - my E91 was showing 45 miles range so with the OBC showing 35.3 mpg average I'd expect to get high 50 litres into a 63 litre tank. But it started cutting out at 54 litres - still I managed to get 55 litres into it (well I did have a voucher for 10p a litre off).

Shame the Z4s got the 55 litre tank like a 1 Series rather than the 63 litre tank of the 3 Series. :headbang:

But I didn't have to mess with my dangle angle on the forecourt!

933 miles on a tank? That’s impressive! :o
Rob

No, I rarely zero that one. I have Nav so use the Journey stats on that instead. I think it was around 330 miles and a displayed 30mpg to that tank which I think is impressive for the type of driving I do i.e no motorways, all B roads, used daily.

I only fret if the 'low fuel' light comes on and I'm on a motorway with no idea where to find a shell station and end up getting fleeced by the motorway service station surcharges - a few pence would be fine but an extra 20p+/L is taking the piss...

I did read the handbook (well some of it.....) when I first had my car and I'm sure I remember reading that performance restrictors kick in when the light comes on to eek out what's left. :(

I was trading my first E89 into the dealer and ran out of fuel on the way. My display went 5 4 3 2 1 then ----- The car coughed sightly then lit up the dash and I had no power at all. I had to cross three lanes of the M6 to get to the hard shoulder and wait for my mate to bring me a can of unleaded. Very embarrassing! I've never run out of fuel before or since!

I get the shivers in the Zed when it gets anywhere near 30 miles left... & strangely anything near 100 miles left in either of the other two oil burners has the same effect

As soon as the light comes on, I like to fill up. Had the Fiesta diesel down to 5 miles remaining though

Mine is my daily though so if I filled up as soon as the light came on I’d be filling up 50 miles sooner which is one day of fuel. It’s only a 55L tank so it’s not like you get a lot of miles to a tankful, unlike the Merc C220 cdi it replaced which I could get to over 800 miles to a tankful.

I tend to fill up with around quarter of a tank left, no idea why, probably being over cautious in case all fuel stations are subject to cyber terrorism :? Surely its better be running on fumes all the time as you're just using more fuel dragging the extra weight around.

Tim.

I tend to fill up when it’s at 1/4 tank as I think it’s less likely to drag any rubbish into the system. Yes I know it has course and fine filters but it’s a belt and braces approach.

Must be getting thick in my old age. Don’t follow this :scratchhead: :scratchhead:

Another thing is that if you let it get low and park up withthe engine running then the floats can stick. You think thst you have 50 miles left and drive off. The float suddenly catches up and the miles remaining figure goes down like there’s a hole in the tank. Gave me a start a few-weeks ago. Plus if you let it get low you can have the engine injest all sorts of crap at the bottom of the tank.

The miles remaining is measured by the current fuel consumption - so ending a long run with a hot engine shows X but set off in the morning it will show a much lower reading.
