Squeaking Window

Hey All! Please help!

Basically in warm weather, whenever i try to put my Left/Passenger window down, it makes a horrendous squeaking noise. There is obvious resistance from something rubbery on the insides as the mechanism slows a little. It starts to squeak around half way down (just before the point the roof lifts off.) On cooler nights, its absolutely fine... Im pretty sure it isnt the regulator.

RELATED??: My Passenger side door handle also needs adjustment - it only 'pops' the door latch on the very extent of its travel. Sometimes you can barely get the door to open (after being left for a while).

I've seen a previous thread by a member saying that theirs was related, but no explicit detail - does anyone have any ideas??

Many Thankyous! :D

With the warm weather lately, I have noticed my passenger window does the same thing. Anyone know of a solution?

I have had the same thing in the past, as have a lot of people on here. I have put silicone spray on the rubber window seals, which seemed to work ok.

Unfortunately, a while after it started the window regulator died, and I have heard of quite a few others that had the same issue... first a squeak, then the window regulator dies a horrible death.

Ahh i see! I think the regulator will die as it's having to exert much more force than designed (it needs to actually 'pull' the window down rather than use good old gravity).

Might have to tear my door apart this weekend to have a butchers. Cheers for the silicone spray idea, will certainly stop the grippyness of rubber for a while!

Before I traded in my coupe I enquired at BMW about this.

Apparently they produce a tiny little bottle of lubricant that works a treat. I declined buying it given it was no bigger than a nail polish bottle and priced at £60!

Another dealer wanted £25 for it, I didn't bother in the end as I traded my car in shortly afterwards.

LOL mine does this too! Just in the past couple of days though due to the warm weather I guess.

Silicone spray? Could someone link to a suitable product so that I don't end up buying the wrong thing?

Thanks
Ally

Any sort of "Back to black" plastic/rubber trim spray (not foam) is usually classed as silicone spray. Look in particular for warnings about not getting it on your tyre tread etc as its VERY SLIPPERY! You can also use it to blacken your tyre sidewalls and scuttle panel just incase it doesnt work

One warning is to try not to get it everywhere, as its a pain to get off glass etc.

Im awaiting for our friends across the pond to arrive as their weather is usually hotter than ours so have probably found a solution!! :D

Cheers Ed

Think I've got an ancient can of back-to-black from the days when I didn't know better - didn't think of that being a silicone spray

If i leave my z4 in the sun my passenger window does exactley this!

Obviously due to parts expanding etc and is ok when not left in direct sun ie 99.9% of the time here in the UK! So im not worrying about it.

Funnily enough the other day when the car was left in the sun my drivers door handle outside wouldnt unlatch the door so had to climb through the passenger side..... It was fully working when i got home and not had any probs since...

Put it down to me not pulling hard enough, this happend to anyone else??

Never experienced this problem on mine, but my hypothesis would be along these lines:

The outer rubber window seal has a velvet like facing to it which slides on the glass. After time this wears off leaving a direct rubber to glass seal. Of course this causes friction and squeaks. Given time the extra strain of moving rubber / glass could also break the window regulator.

As I say just an untested theory, but if my window squeaked in that way and or was difficult to raise and lower I'd start by replacing that rubber seal.

Of course if the squeak is not from that seal, then any amount of silicone spray, new seal won't help and you need the door card off to identify what is squeaking and where the friction is coming from, before it causes failure. For that I'd be looking at the glass sliders and pulleys/cables.

Yep this happens to my passenger door too!!

One thing to give the Z4 is that at least theyre consistent!!

the last time my windows squeaked(both sides), stealers re-lubed the mechanism but the window regulator eventually failed. stealers replaced both regulators.

yeah, happens on mine too. I have a can of Silicon Spray I brought from Halfords which states suitable for rubber trim... seems to work OK, although it does spread onto glass quite easily.

mine 2! i thought it was because i used glass cleaner on it but it did it again today. very annoying! :headbang:

Me 2. I sprayed a loads of silicon spray down inside the door and its still happening.
I placed paper sheets between the glass and rubber trim to see if it would go away and it still did it. Definately something inside the door. :(

Well it's not good, took mine apart last weekend and the 'squeak' had nothing to do with rubber on glass.

Mine ended up being a frayed cable which was what was restricting the movement and causing the noise. So it's off to the breakers to get a replacment.

Hopfully this isn't everyones problem, but it's whats happened to mine. At least £50 for runners and motor from the breakers with a 3 month warrenty and a mornings work isn't to much of a kick in the teath! :(

Oh and i ended up buying a new foam door insulation thing from the dealers as removing the runners destroyed my one! :headbang:
