squeaking rear suspension

Hi all,

I have an annoying squeak coming from the rear of the car. It's most noticeable when getting in and out of the car. I've recently had the rear wheels off to do the brakes (weekend just gone) and have checked the springs. They look absolutely fine and almost new. Would the rear strut mounts make this noise if they're worn?
 
Yep could do, just replaced mine. Removing the rear shelf and brackets to get to the the mounts was nowhere near as bad as I expected, off in 25 minutes. Could also be the shocks themselves squeaking

Will check the handbrake first then. A silly design if you ask me as they don't self clean being inside the disk. Had to do my old E46 before it went and was a right PITA. A good tip to keep them clean is to every now and then apply the handbrake lightly and drive a little way. This "should" keep the pads and inside of the disk clean.

I've had the handbrake issue but it did not squeak as I got in the car, only when I used the handbrake. It squeaked for a few hundred metres and then stopped. the solution was new shoe springs.

I've had the exact same issue caused by the handbrake shoes
 
The parts are relatively cheap (as mentioned I did this on my old E46) so if you're going to the effort of removing the wheel and disk you may as well replace the parts. New spring sets can be got from the dealer for cheap and the shoes themselves are only £18.90 on ECP. This will obviously be my next job as the squeak is rather embarrassing.
 
I have the asame embarrassing problem! Please post to say if you managed to fix it.

Yup mine was the handbrake shoes. Dismantled the rear brakes and the shoes were in excellent condition (TBH they should be given the fact that it is usually only applied when the car is stopped).
Dismantled and cleaned them. Didnt need to replace anything just LIGHTLY lubricate the area where the pads contact the back plate with some copper grease and re assemble.
You may need to click the adjusters over a few times to get the handbrake to work evenly.

Had the same thing with mine - embarrassing squeak getting in or out of the car. Thought it was my knees, but turned out to be the handbrake shoes. A spot of lubrication and all was well...
 
You might want to consider replacing the coil spring upper and lower rubber pads; you mentioned the springs look new - I recently replaced the springs on mine, but noticed the rubber pads were quite worn. I didn't have replacements at the time; my local garage advised that they should be replaced if the suspension starts 'squeaking'....................I'm getting some ordered and will replace them next service.

Mine squeaks as well. Do you lubricate the brake lining where it contacts the back plate/disc, won't this allow the handbrake to slip when it is applied?
 
Its not the lining you lubricate rather the metal shoe that the lining is bonded to. Only a very small amount of something like copper slip is needed.
