Spraying hardtop

I know that seems peculiar to be thinking about hardtops when the weather has suddenly improved. But I am...

There are a few around at the moment, but all a different colour to my car. So, the question is: has anyone sprayed a hardtop? The reason I ask is that I can see that there are areas of painted metal inside the hardtop when it is off the car - but are these visible when the roof is fitted? Has anyone painted the inside too (removing the headlining etc)?

Not got one or painted one, though I am sure someone has... But a black hardtop might look good on your car as-is...

This is what a mean - a picture of the underneath of the hardtop when not fitted to the car:

What I'm wondering is whether those painted areas are visible when the hardtop is in situ... I'm guessing the front section wouldn't be, but I don't know about the others. Hoping the inside wouldn't have to be stripped and painted too...

You'd have to have it sprayed round the edges at least to do a decent job. Personally if I could see any other colour, even off the car, it would annoy me... It doesn't look like the headlining would take much to get off / on again, and it wouldn't have to be sprayed all the way in, only 6 to 8 inches I'd guess ? If you're going to spend the money then strip it yourself and get the job done right

Yes, the lining is quite easy to take off, well from what i was told by the bmw dealer when i managed to smash the rear glass in it

Several people have resprayed them. AFAIK all have removed the lining to do it. You also need to anyway to remove the spoiler to be able to get a good finish under it.

I'm sure all the bits you illustrate are hidden by the car or the trim pieces that fit in the sides, but as posted above I would never leave them a different colour

BTW - I don't recommend standing it up like that - the glass will shatter very easily

I thought that was the case re: painting the inside - just didn't know how big a job stripping it would be. I'm still looking around for a hardtop but weighing up various options - spraying is going to add another £300 plus on top of the price of one which is the wrong colour, so it's got to be at a bargain price to make it worthwhile...
